Prince and Funkabily On the Elvis thread I mentioned that Prince did a couple of Funkabily songs so I did not think he was an Elvis hater but I realize he really did't do a lot of these songs. I could only think of few. Can anybody think of anymore.

----- No, I mean funkabilly. That is a word I use to describe these odd songs. | |

I thought jack u off was also "funkabilly". Not to mention the many times I've thought Prince was imitating Elvis mannerisms in otherwise normal prince tunes.
Incidentally, Laurie, I've stolen your term funkabilly for my own music, hope you don't mind couldn't resist and so far it gets a positive response. | |

Give credit where credit is due. Elvis didn't write those songs, and Buddy Holly did way more rockabilly than Elvis did, and in a much shorter time frame -- plus, Buddy wrote most all of his own songs. Another similiarity between Buddy and Prince are the experimental recording techniques they used, plus the introduction of new and different instruments or "sounds" into their songs. Buddy also did some cool things with his voice. Peace. | |

Let's Go Crazy When You Were Mine [Edited 1/13/05 8:31am] Sister is SO not rockabilly... When You Were Mine isn't either...more punk than most... Can't see Play In the Sunshine being rockabilly flavored either, for the most part. It's an upbeat song that mainly has bass drum one the 1 and 3 and snare on 2 and 4, but that doesn't define rockabilly. It's more than what I mentioned. It's actually the attitude of the song to complement it's upbeat tone. I am MrVictor.... | |

(Buddy Holly) Elvis was a creative genius in terms of style. No one ever talks about how Sinatra couldn't write, same case for Elvis, they used their voice and their instincts to create the style they wanted. In Elvis' case it was original and genius. Buddy was not the giant that Elvis was, however he was a great writer, one of the first at that time. He branched out into using all kinds of different instruments and there is no telling how great he coulda been if he'd lived longer than 22 or 23. | |

I thought we were talking about the rockabilly sound? Buddy Holly took it to great lengths in a very short time. And regarding music history: "Without the blues, Elvis wouldn't be here." | |

I saw Stray Cats here in my home town with Roman Holiday opening up for them. It was such a great show. "I Wont Stand In Your Way" is one of my favorite songs.
