This is based only on that initial vibe i was hit with on the original listening to the album.

For the record, i'm not one of princes more critical fans.. I'm simply a fan who has enjoyed greatly most of the music he has made from day one. I don't bitch about every single song not being a master piece as i notice a lot of orgers due. I listen to a song for what its worth on its own merits. that said the albums which didnt hit with me off the back as a whole were

Lovesexy: I remember going.. "what the fuck!"... to this day I still consider LS as a whole one of his weaker joints... but the disc it self is one of my most treasured because of one song..... Anna Stesia

Graffiti Bridge: Big disappointment and had to grow on my to enjoy songs like 'Joy in Repetition"

Trust you're just kidding.

I've been a fan for nearly 15 years - doesn't sound too new to me.

Everyone is going to have different opinions - entitled to them in fact.

The 1980s stuff sounds dated to someone like me [I don't much like 80s stuff by other artists either].

hammer biggrin Let me tell you something about the 80's...

HEAD will always sound good...
UPTOWN will always sound good...
LET'S WORK will always sound good...

The first of his albums I was completely disappointed with.

Two or three good songs and a load of crap ones.

"The Gold Experience" was promised to be a mind-blowing one and it turned out to be just decent. That was a big disappointment for me personally at the time. I didn't have that high hopes for "Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic" and even though it was far worse than I had expected, twas no big deal. By that point I had already become accustomed to the idea of Prince releasing mediocre records.

Musicology

I became a fan in March 2004. I got myself symbol, D&P, Lovesexy and For You before musicology came out. I also had the greatest hits like 1999, Little Red Corvette etc. as MP3s. I was so excited! I loved the packaging, he looks really good in the cover. Took it home. Played. Listened it again, and A million Days& Cinnamon Girl still once more after that. Then I sighed, put it in the shelf and put Symbol on.
It's the least played Prince record I have. Even Emancipation, which is too big to swallow in couple of months time, has been played more, due to Betcha By Golly Wow. It's video got me into Prince.

A lot of Prince's records in the 90's(in fact every one of them) were a major disappointment to me. I stopped buying after Chaos and Disorder. What a mess that was. I mean there was always a gem or twon on each record that stood out and were definate classics, but they totally were lost and dis-credited when coupled with collections of messy throw away songs. Emancipation had a solid 9 song record in there somewhere, but failed miserably with all the extra bs in it. I actually loved Batman. I thought it was pure Prince that delivered clean edges compared to the messy layer upon layer of tracks on most of his releases during that time. Prince is a genious and it got really frustrating when his music didn't reflect that.

You're kidding, right? Great album with some fantastic tracks.
As to the most disappointing
Grafitti Bridge - self indulgent crap soundtrack to a self indulgent crap movie
NPS - just plain crap
TRC - religious rhetoric crap (although great musicianship)
Musicology - desperate attempt to appeal to the R&B market

I may be the odd ball here but, I've never been disappointed.

I've never really known WHAT to expect from the man, and that's one of the things I love about him. There is no Purple Rain pt. 2, or 1999 Redux. (well, ok....how about SOTT Redux!)

Just when you think he's gonna zig.....he zags.

And I like it like that! I love that he puts my thoughts and feelings into song.....and I HATE when he puts things into song that I am not ready to face about myself, or admit to others is true about me! pout I am along for The Ride, and wherever it goes, that's where I'm going. There may be some albums I like and others that are not faves, but "disappointed"? No way. Because every time I think he can't surprise me, that I can handle whatever he puts out and keep control of my life, he throws out a line and reels me right back into the madness!

(o.k., now you all will throw lots of virtual shit on me...)

"Emancipation" is a masterpiece! It's an amazing collection of songs. For me, it is one of his best records, standing right up there with SOTT, prince and TRC!

I understand though that some people here don't like the production on "Emancipation" - he really used lots of drum computing, synths etc. on it (not everyone's taste maybe), but that's something I like about Prince - every album is different. I mean, I also like the TRC musicianship or the guitars on "The Gold Experience", but I accept that P moves on and experiments with sounds. For me, I actually even like the production on "Emancipation", because it fits the whole mood of the songs (relaxed, loving Mayte etc.) very well - the "angry" Gold sound couldn't do that.

"Emancipation"

The constant self-promoting of this record since 1995, stating everywhere
that it would contain the best songs he'd kept aside since 1993 and a lot
of new kick ass tunes he was writing.

At one point Mayte told the press he had 52 incredible songs put aside for
this project.

So I thought "best songs put aside since 1993? Damn those have got to be
good if they're even better than anything on COME/GOLD because I love the
whole catalogue of songs from that era".

So what I -and no doubt many others- was expecting was some of that hard
hitting, cursing, loud ass guitar music and beautiful instruments.

What it turned out to be was plastic production and slow r&b ballads and
half baked shite clearly directed at the american R&B charts.

The first single was the most cringe-worthy lead off single in Prince
history.

The 3 discs contained enough nice songs in the end when I got over the
initial disappointment, but I would give gold now to see a tape of my
face when I played the album for the first time.

My heart just plummeted to the floor and my mouth went all

These were exactly my thoughts. The biggest disappointment was that Kate Bush was supposed to be on "My Computer" and I couldn´t ever hear her because her voice is so deep in the mix. What a let-down.

Probably "Emancipation" I had really high expectations for that one, and I was terribly disappointed when I first listened to it. The artwork was terrible, too. I think everybody agrees that there are a lot of good tracks on it and he could have made a very good 1-CD-album (with somebodys somebody, one kiss at a time, soul sanctuary, curious child, dreamin about u, the holy river, style, sleep around and the love we make on it). But he didn´t.

I never knew that.
So her voice is buried somewhere deep inside that song?
Next time I'll turn it up real loud & listen for her.

I thought "Rave" was bad - I expected a killer album under the Clive Davis clout and the Emancipation desaster, but no...

And - most of the new albums would have disappointed me massively if they had followed Parade/SOTT/Lovesexy, but alas my expectations are now lower...

See that's the prob. Everyone has different trax that they like on Emancipation, but noone likes the whole thing. MayB in that case there were advantages to putting out a 3-CD set. i mean your choices are way off mine. Where's Face Down, FriendMotheretc., Saviour, New World, Slave, Emancipation (ok u could skip that one)? See what I mean? I've seen threads like this before and you'll find one person's fave track is the one the next person always skips! (Like there are peeps here who LOVE White Mansion and Sex in the Summer, whereas for me those are among the most annoying trax).

Absolutely. If DMSR or Something In The Water were released as new singles tomorrow they'd blow stuff like The Neptunes etc out of the water. He was WAY ahead of his time and i can't believe more people don't acknowledge just how much Prince has influenced todays music. His shadow is HUGE.
Anyhoo...
Grafitti Bridge was the album that did it for me. Then Diamonds And Pearls, cause i thought he was gonna try and make up for GB with it.

How do ppl not acknowledge Prince's influence? The media happily calls him a living legend and musical genius, and many artists like Outkast and Pherrell aren't exactly shy about how much he's influenced their style of music making.
