"Emancipation"

The constant self-promoting of this record since 1995, stating everywhere
that it would contain the best songs he'd kept aside since 1993 and a lot
of new kick ass tunes he was writing.

At one point Mayte told the press he had 52 incredible songs put aside for
this project.

So I thought "best songs put aside since 1993? Damn those have got to be
good if they're even better than anything on COME/GOLD because I love the
whole catalogue of songs from that era".

So what I -and no doubt many others- was expecting was some of that hard
hitting, cursing, loud ass guitar music and beautiful instruments.

What it turned out to be was plastic production and slow r&b ballads and
half baked shite clearly directed at the american R&B charts.

The first single was the most cringe-worthy lead off single in Prince
history.

The 3 discs contained enough nice songs in the end when I got over the
initial disappointment, but I would give gold now to see a tape of my
face when I played the album for the first time.

My heart just plummeted to the floor and my mouth went all sad

The Rainbow Children was, without a doubt, the most disappointing album I have ever purchased. I couldnt wait, I had it open b4 I could get to the car. TRC, coupled with Batman and Robin with always be the most disappointing movie and music moments of my life.

Not that bad, but hugely disappointing. What a lame way to conclude a pretty unique decade of legendary recordings... shrug

To be honest it was ATWIAD. After the hitfest that was Purple Rain, my expectations were crazy high for his next release.

When I first put the needle down on the vinyl and heard all this psychedelic stuff, well this confused pretty much sums it up. Since then I've grown to appreciate it, but at the time I was really wavering.

That album taught me that some of his work can take a few listens before you "get it".

I was pretty disappointed with NEWS, I thought it was an opportunity to let go and do something really experimental, but it's just boring background music.

Probably the most disappointing was ONA Live. Always thought a Prince live album in amazing sound quality woulb be great - but in the end, a great tour that just doesn't come alive on the album. Even the aftershow disc had some poor choices on it.

Also I'd add to the list The Truth which should have been just Prince with an acoustic guitar, instead he managed to over-produce it!

NewPowerSoul -- With a name like that, and Prince's spirituality at the time, it was gonna be better than Lovesexy, right? What a let down! Then he even has the nerve to give thanks to some Love4OneAnother friends in the liner notes. What about the album was "love4oneanother"-ish? And how arrogant to be so spiritual and write a song called "The One" and have it be about oneself! Nevermind some of the most shallow compositions he's ever written in his life, all put together on one album. I did NOT expect it, and especially not at that time in his life.

The late nineties were a disappointment for me. I was put off by Batman for sure and I didn't know what to think of Graffiti Bridge. So I was off his band wagon for a bit there. I was waiting for him to come to his senses (I bought the albums but didn't really like them.)

Lovesexy...before this, I'd blindly buy anything he put out knowing it was good before I'd heard a thing but, this album changed it all. I wish U heaven and Alphabet St. were good but that was it. Oh, and the cover. You just had to love the cover!

For me, it's Batman. That's one of my fav movies, one I've watched a billion times religiously since I was 5, and so you'd think my musical idol doing the soundtrack would be a dream come true. But nope, I can't even bear to listen to most of the CD's songs on their own.

What about you?

Too many really...

Come - after hearing and loving the new stuff live at the 1st nite of the European tour 1993 the album was a hugh disappointment - the songs had been computerised, ugh!

Emancipation would be the ultimate disappointment and I gave up on Prince at this point. I probably didn't listen to it again until TRC's musicianship brought me back.
This truely was the album I had been waiting for since 1996. His best IMO.

Also as I became a fan in the early nineties going back back and buying some of the 80s stuff was a HUGE disappointment:

I'm thinking ATWIAD, Lovesexy, Batman, 1999, Controversy.

#1: NPS
I can't remember if the album was already out when he performed on the Vibe show giggle but The One sounded SO DAMN GOOD... I thought I was in for it w/ that album. The only other song I even listen to is Come On but it's grown on me, didn't really like it @ the time. It seemed SO tame for a Prince song. But that's the biggest let down b/c I thought it would be GREAT... not sad

#2: Emancipation
Lots of hype around this one, chock full of weak songs unfortunately. Would have been a decent double album but it just doesn't hold up well over time. Too many fake instruments.

#3: Rave
I had some hope but hadn't heard anything off it so expectations weren't fueled by an actual song. Plus this was after the 1999 New Master, right? neutral That sucked nuts so I wasn't real hopeful.

How sad that I can even say these words about my baby! disbelief

Thank god for that, but come to think of it he was 'never the same' before either.

Dissapointments? Batman was the first, but Rave was the biggest. Come, NPS, Chaos & Disorder and Emancipation were also to varying degrees.

Purple rain!

I was too young when it first came out, so I knew the hits but I really didn't hear the entire album until the mid-90's. By that time I had several of his other albums, but everybody said that PR was supposed to be the best...well, I couldn't see why, and I still can't! It's one of my least favorite Prince albums, and personally I think he's done much better work both before and after.
