Motherless Child.. makes me sad.. I was recently watching Prince's performance of Motherless Child on Septimo TV in Spain (I think)...
His intro to the song is... "Oh, Mama, Mama.. why'd you put me out on the street.. I was only 12 years old..." Everyone on this board probably knows about his troubled adolescence. His mother did indeed put him out, when he started being a bit precocious in the house and his step-father was tripping on him. He then proceeded to be kick out by his dad. His sister Tyka has said that he called his dad to beg him to take him back. His father said no and Prince cried in the phone booth (remember those?) for TWO HOURS. It is heart-wrentching performance. He asked for the lights to be turned down low and the expression on his face. After that, he fell into his musicianship and all that. But there was that moment. You can say that this is all pre-rehearsed, but song selection says a lot about where your head is at. And he is always saying that you'll find out more about him that way than you ever will from his interviews. What's your take on this? We never get over the demons of our youth. I understood he Come here, babe.. yeah...

Okay, so I went on the web to see if anyone used the same intro lyrics that I war referring to...
Based on that research, it appears that they are his alone. The bit about being 12yrs old and that Adam/Eve stuff (since he was ho'ing). Therefore, my point still stands, this is about his personal situation AND a great cover. The two are not mutually exclusive. If you viewed the performance you'd know what I mean. Check it out, man. Come here, babe.. yeah...
