This is sooooo tough, not because I think all his material is great, but because I'd have to concentrate in the aspect the song is the best... Musically?, Lyrically?, Inspiration?, Groovy?
I hate this, but if I had to leave only 10 songs to listen and detroy the rest, I'd leave: Dreamin' bout u When doves cry Solo If I was your girlfriend Strange Relationship And God Created Woman The Sacrifice of Victor Anna Stesia Get Off Eye Hate you "America is a continent..."

In no particular order, except the first, which I think is my favorite, and a brief explanation as to why:
Dance On - the crazy syncopated drums and lyrical significance She's Always In My Hair - I musta listened to this ten times before I knew it was Prince, and then when they announced his name, I was like, "Ohhhh! That's him....cool!" Computer Blue (even better in extended version) - the craziest song he's ever written, and it really would be a treat if he re-released it in a vault collection, and included the extended part along with the omitted second verse (!) All the Critics Love U In New York - great rock/jazz experimentation Rebirth Of the Flesh - any song recorded under the Camille pseudynom is funky, but this one especially. Silicon - if anyone ever needed evidence that Prince was still on top of his game, as far as creating new sound, this would be a prime reference. Power Fantastic - the best one-take song of the bunch. 1+1+1=3 - it's the funkiest song on TRC, and I've actually done a lip-sync performance of it twice. Sometimes It Snows In April - the first song that ever made me cry. East - a no-sound sparred audial banquet.

Crystal Ball: very experimental, cool lyrics, great orchestration
If I Was Your Girlfriend: weird beat, weird vocals, ultracool track North: just so beautiful! The Rainbow Children: finally a daring Prince track again, I love the way this one builds up. And the segue at the end is gorgeous. Controversy: mean synthfunk with cool lyrics The Beautiful Ones: this one speaks for itself The Ballad Of Dorothy Parker: clever beat, clever lyrics, cool song Sometimes It Snows In April: the only song that made me cry from Prince Paisley Park: dreamy, cool beat, great guitar, lovely chorus Adore: the most beautiful ode to love ever IMHO RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

In no particular order...
Purple Rain: Classic in every respect U Make My Sun Shine: Pure gold, lush arrangement, great use of gospel conventions, though most people haven't heard it Kiss: Very spare, but infectious, great vocal work If I Was Your Girlfriend: So different, I love the lyrics, he's so insightful about women 7: Great rhythm that carries the song, I have to sing to it whenever it's on Baby Knows: This is a great rock-out song. He always looks like he's having a great time when he performs it. Very sexy. All Day, All Night: Great club anthem, great cover of it by Jill Jones Forever In My Life: It made me want to marry him, as well as get titilated that he might finally be settling down, what a ha-ha that turned out to be, he's such a tease Head: Whenever he performs this, he knocks it out of the ballpark, simple song but shows that sometimes less is a lot more The Greatest Romance That's Ever Been Sold: I've been in love with this song from the moment I heard it, I know most people are ambivalent about it Come here, babe.. yeah...

If i was being sent to a desert island with only 10 songs for company, tonight they would be-
Joy In Repetition (the full length version with drum machine intro) Sometimes It Snows In April 17 Days 12" Computer Blue Hallway The Ballad Of Dorothy Parker Rockhard In A Funky Place God Automatic Something It The Water Grand Progression I hate lists. There's a trend on UK TV at the moment-'Top 100 whatever Of All Time' and i actually puke blood if i stumble accross them. I can't pick 10 favourite Prince songs. I love the 12" Gett Off Urge Mix 'cause i used to get drunk and dance around to it in a club. I love Still Would Stand All Time 'cause it used to come on at sunset on my walkman on my way home from Uni over the Forth Road Bridge. I love Tony M's crap raps 'cause my mate does some great impressions of them. I love the entire Lovesexy concert 'cause it taught me how to play guitar (amongst other things). I lost my virginity to the Batman album (not literally). In short, Prince has soundtracked my life for the last 20 years so i can't choose 10 favourites. soon the boat will come and sail us all away "Prince don't hear Ravel when he wanna make love to his woman. He hears drums and shit." Miles Davis
