I think "Head" would be appropriate. It's very representative, both lyrically and musically.

possibly erotic city actually. it's very very prince, very funk, and its amazing. but its not like one of those songs thats just pure fan fave.
you have to choose something representative but not really obscure and "fan" like. let's work doesn't strike me as the the greatest funky prince song. DMSR might be a good one. y'see sexy dancer is very trad. funky but not very original. head i do think would be representative actually. tambourine? nah, just "fan" like. girls and boys? i suppose housequake would be an uber prince funk song? i'd say erotic city, dmsr or housequake

I wish you heaven (part 1,2,3) 12" , U need another lover like you need a hole in yo head, Irresistable bitch.
Any one of these will show up MJ's working day and night appropiately. No P Funk "one nation under a groove" ?

Any one of these will show up MJ's working day and night appropiately. No P Funk "one nation under a groove" ? It's not finished yet. This is not a definitive list... I have considered One Nation... but went for Let's Take It To The Stage (Funkadelic) and Bop Gun (Parliament). Irrestible Bitch would be cool. I'm currently trying Controversy. Erotic City is another great idea. If any of you have SOULSEEK I've got this collection assembled. Its' called Funk List and my user name is kalowski.

Could choose Pop Life. Not totally funky, but that bassline is pure funk. What about 1999, guitar riff is pure funk. There's always Kiss. As with many Prince songs funk is an element and not the total basis of the song. D.M.S.R, Head, Controversy, and others I can't think of right now are more purely funk. "Life is just a party and parties weren't meant to last"

how can you have a history of funk and not have zapp/roger troutman on it?? |

I agree Erotic City or DMSR "New Power slide...."

I would say sexyMF is funky as Hell.
But musicology could do the job as well, and talking about funkadelic I would put another song like ...one nation under a groove. I would also add freak power which was a cool funky band before fat boy slim turned fat.

i actually think irresistable bitch could be better than dmsr. so i'd go for erotic city or IB, or maybe the song controversy

DMSR definitely jumps to mind, but what about:
New Position!!!! Housequake's an otion but I think it's too JB-reminiscent to stand out in this company. Ok, it would always STAND OUT, butit's still not distinctive enough style-wise. "We've never been able to pull off a funk number"
"That's becuase we're soulless auttomatons"

I've always thought it odd that Prince is left out of funk history books and music. But, he's always kind of been an oddball who doesn't really fit neatly eanywhere
