I passed the Purple Rain era more or less unaffected but when watching the "Raspberry Beret" clip on t.v., I suddenly knew why there was so much rave about this guy.
It was one of those strange moments. "Bang" and you are a fan. I went to the record store and immediately bought ATWIAD.
So this means 2005 sees me as a Prince fans for 20 years now.

Hearing STILL WAITING coming out of my cousins boom box. He talked about everything in that song that I was feeling. It must have been 1979 or 1980.

I saw the "Kiss" video on TV during summer holidays back in 1988 or 1989, being 12 years old. I just knew the cover of Tom Jones and Art of Noise before, not even knowing that Prince had done the original (shame on me!). However, I LOVED it!

Then, in 1990, when the Graffiti Bridge album was released, they once played the song "Graffiti Bridge" on the radio discussing the album, and... I also LOVED that! (Maybe I'm the only one here who became a Prince fan due to that song. However, I still love it!!!)

So, in 1991, being 15 years old, I finally decided to buy my first Prince album, Diamonds and Pearls. Ever since then, I've been a Prince addict.

I became remotely interested when seeing him perform with Beyonce at the 2004 Grammys. But I became a full fledged fan when a friend of mine dragged me to his Musicology tour show in Birmingham in April. After seeing the way he played guitar, I listened to every single album I could get my hands on from that day forward.

Hell, I'm still rediscovering albums to this day. At the moment, I seem to have given "Come" a second chance.

Seeing the LRC video and being intrigued by that petite little gay man adorned in purple doing splits. Then hearing "U Got The Look" i was HOOKED.

The first time I ever saw the "Batdance" video (way back in 1989) I thought "Prince" is a group because of the two personalities he performed - I though they are twin brothers!!! lol Then I realized Prince is one man (my brother told me lol)! So, I was just blown away from the music and The Man! Since then I am a fan! biggrin

batman was my favorite movie when it came out,(i was5 or so) and my mom bought me the soundtack 4 my birthday that year. it ws ny favorite album 4 years, then sorta forgot about it. got into prince again when i found out this.

"pound"(a canadian hiphop mag) asked 20 rap artists,"if they could work with any artist in the industry", and they all said jay-z. they then asked jay-z and he said prince. also remembered 2pac sayong he was tha biggest prince fan, and i thought,"i got the batman album at home, i should give it a listen" and boom. remembered how i loved it. bought purple rain that evening and its been on since then.2 or 3 years now.

I was always fascinated by him, since I loved the Batdance video when I was 5. Then he changed his name to a symbol and I thought he was too weird.

But then in like early 2003 I heard some songs of his in my sisters music folder, downloaded some more, got addicted to them and touched by them in a way that I never thought was possible, so I went out over the course of the next year and pretty much bought all his albums and adored almost every single one of 'em.

i think it's funny how many young 'uns became fans because of Batman -- didn't your parents know it was a Prince album! can you imagine a 5-year old listening to "Scandalous! just you and me..." or "Vicki Waiting... why is your organ so small?" or "Lemon Crush," etc. It's certainly no kids album. But it had a Batman logo, so it must've been for kids, right? LOL!

Anyway, for me it was in 1983, and I only needed to see the video for "1999" and hear "Little Red Corvette" on the radio -- that hooked me for life -- combination of style and sound.

Actually, my grandmother was with me when she bought the "Dirty Mind" album for me in 1980. I was in the eighth grade at the time. This was in the days before the "Parental Advisory" warning on records but the album did have a sticker on the plastic that said "This album may be unsuitable for young listeners". I simply put my thumb over the sticker and showed it to her and told her it was what I wanted. She looked at the big white letters that said "Prince" and thought he was Freddy Prinze from "Chico and the Man". lol

lol I remember going to Fred Meyer with my dad -- I think I was in the eighth grade -- and he said he'd buy an album for me, so I picked out Vanity 6. I wasn't sure he'd actually get it for me, but he gave me one of those smiles that said, "That's my boy!" Yeah, he bought it.

OMG I can totally see the mistake between Freddy Prinze and Prince. You should get someone to photoshop the Dirty Mind album with Freddy Prinze's face. Haha!!

Someone please photoshop this.

I´ve always liked Prince, I think the first song I heard was Little Red Corvette. But as a fan I´m a little late, cos I REALLY got into him just recently....about a few months ago. I still need a looooot of money to get all his albums. Right now I have just three. boxed

don't remember what came first: me watching 'Purple Rain' or seeing the Syracuse, NY show on television back in '84.....anyway, I was hooked!

Also, I was anti-Michael Jackson, and Prince seemed like MJ's opposite, which was cool in my book!

I was 13 years old.
