prince and his master`s

I have to say there are a lot of knowledgeable prince fans in here who may be able to answer my question? Back in 1986 around the release of SOTT, Prince signed a new contract with WB, at what point did he not realize he does not own his masters of his music. Why would he sign a contract then with WB if he was not able to own his masters. I remember reading an article a couple of years ago that Bono of the group U2 askes Prince the meaning of the word "slave" written on his face.Prince responded " do u own your masters to your music" Bono answer no, because of that conversation U2 does own there master`s and Prince still do not. Is there a site where it lists which artist doown there masters

I don't know of any website, and I doubt there is any comprehensive listing. 'Ownership' of the rights of master recordings is determined by contract, so this information would only be available if the parties to the contract disclosed it.

Generally, however, recording artists sign contracts which assign the record company rights over the master recordings for a set period of time, following which they revert to the recording artist.

For the rights to U2's master recordings to have reverted back to them, either the contractual period the that rights were originally assigned to the record company has expired, or U2 will have renogotiated assignment of those rights (possibly at a cost).

It's "masters", not "master's"

Otherwise we'd be talking about the master of Prince.

Damn we need a grammar forum on here wink

Thanks for bringing the Bono thing up. I recently acquired, hm..cough cough...a recording of U2 singing THE CROSS. It credits U2 with Prince. Was Prince even there in this live recording or was it just U2 doing a cover. The guitar playing kind of doesn't sound like Prince.

Wasn't there but I've heard the recording. I think it was during an aftershow in Dublin at The Pod around 1995. Bono joined Prince on stage and started singing The Cross messing up the lyrics not sure if Prince is playing but I've heard it's him on guitar.

Thanks for the info. Bono did okay. The audience lost their mind. It really is a good choice by Bono though. I can totally see him covering this song.

Yes. It's Prince on guitar. It was the opening to Prince's aftershow at The Pod - 31 March 1995 - following the second concert performance in Dublin on the Ultimate Live Experience tour.

Aftershow setlist:
