Whether the track was intended to be a joke or not, the trouble is when Prince tries to be humourous and make "light jokes" in his music, it often ends up embarassing and the music ends up SOUNDING like a joke (Wedding Feast anyone?).

PoomPoom blows. It's a joke without a punch-line.

I like "Poom Poom" but I don't take it seriously!

Yes, it's a crap, but that's why it makes me laugh all the time!

MattyJam - what the hell are you talking about? Prince has been funny in many, many tracks over the years! Are you seriously suggesting that he fails in that department? Shit, the Exodus album is almost a laugh a minute.

He's one of the funniest artists I listen to. Frank Zappa was the same - and even though he extended the jokes to the music, the music itself didn't become a joke.

Sure, not every joke is going to push your button, but to say that Prince fails when he tries to inject some humour is, frankly, ludicrous!

I'm not slating Prince's use of humour in general. I love his humour in Bob George, Movie Star... all those ones...

But Wedding Feast and PoomPoom both fall flat on their faces and are embarassing to listen to.

You don't consider that its clever (not genius) that he uses the repetitive "poompoom" throughout the chorus to imply the pounding he obviously likes to give the poompoom??!!!!!

Its cool if you don't like it - but your original post gives it less credit than its due and you seemed to be knocking his use of homour in general.
