We clearly have different tastes dear, that much is evident, you like Poom Poom Wow, had no idea this was such a loveitorhateit track. Question for the haters: Do you like "Get Off"? Cuz this track is pretty much a twin cousin.

I'm in. I like it.
I think people object to the "poompoompoompoompoom..." chorus, but the drum/bass part is nice. Whatever. Prince fans never agree on anything anyhow.

Whether the track was intended to be a joke or not, the trouble is when Prince tries to be humourous and make "light jokes" in his music, it often ends up embarassing and the music ends up SOUNDING like a joke (Wedding Feast anyone?).
PoomPoom blows. It's a joke without a punch-line.

I like "Poom Poom" but I don't take it seriously!
Yes, it's a crap, but that's why it makes me laugh all the time! [Edited 1/20/05 4:57am]

PoomPoom blows. It's a joke without a punch-line. How does the music here sound like a joke? I HATE wedding feast, but this song doesn't stray too far from what P's been doing his whole career, just singing about his love of p&$#y, tutti fruitti or whatever you wanna call it. Did Little Richard need a punchline?

MattyJam - what the hell are you talking about? Prince has been funny in many, many tracks over the years! Are you seriously suggesting that he fails in that department? Shit, the Exodus album is almost a laugh a minute.
He's one of the funniest artists I listen to. Frank Zappa was the same - and even though he extended the jokes to the music, the music itself didn't become a joke. Sure, not every joke is going to push your button, but to say that Prince fails when he tries to inject some humour is, frankly, ludicrous! ...we have only scratched the surface of what the mind can do...

I think a lot of people who aren't fans, or they're just casual fans really don't 'get' that side of Prince. There's a lot of comedy in Prince's music, and it's usually executed well (Exodus as you say, or something like Scarlet Pussy or the humour in Bob George). You never really hear about that when the media speaks of Prince, they think all he sings about is getting his end away.

Its the most frequent, un-informed comment I hear - "Prince, all he ever sings about is sex". Well, sure, there's a healthy dose of sex in his music, but there is so much more to him than that. Don't know why people are so down about it though - seems to me that whenever I flick through the radio stations at the moment, everyone else is singing about sex too. Its just most of them are 14 and can't be taken seriously! ...we have only scratched the surface of what the mind can do...

Did Little Richard need a punchline? It sucks musically. The chorus consists of "Poompoompoompoompoompoompoompoompoom". Hardly musical genius. I'm not slating Prince's use of humour in general. I love his humour in Bob George, Movie Star... all those ones... But Wedding Feast and PoomPoom both fall flat on their faces and are embarassing to listen to.

You don't consider that its clever (not genius) that he uses the repetitive "poompoom" throughout the chorus to imply the pounding he obviously likes to give the poompoom??!!!!!
Its cool if you don't like it - but your original post gives it less credit than its due and you seemed to be knocking his use of homour in general. ...we have only scratched the surface of what the mind can do...

Some idiot 14 year old talking about sex or someone who sounds like their 14. God forbid anyone should have a sense of humor or just get to the point like Prince does. Poom is just P joking around.

Since when was there EVER a music critic named Matty Jam??? Musical genius??? WTF, would U know about musical genius, AND be able to comment on it!!! Can U write something better??? Obviously NOT, cause then people would be commenting on your lame shit, Mr. Rolling Stone. Get yourself a hobby and leave people's opinions as they be. As it happens, I DO write music, and have never written anything as appauling as PoomPoom.
I can't believe I'm even having a discussion with someone who can defend that song with a straight face. Each to his own I guess, but I see no need for your visciousness. It isn't an attractive colour on you.

I can't stand PoomPoom, but I actually think Wedding Feast, like the rest of the lyrics in TRC, is kind of funny. No Candy 4 Me
