What do you think about people who say Prince puts out too much music?

I was watching old footage of a documentary on Prince and Little Richard said Prince should put a limit on releases. Allow some time to pass before releasing new material. He said the public would appreciate him more. I hate this attitude! I can't get enough of Prince. Seriously can you imagine all the matereial that would be lost-well I shouldn't say lost but-the fans deprived of if he did that? Do you agree or do you think the fans need time to miss him?

That was back in the day, when he had an album out every 10-12 months, singles, remixes, b-sides, associate projects, and annual tours. The Warner days were good to us.

Once he "freed the music", we got alot more bulk and outtakes, but in a random distribution with little thought to the extras.

Now it seems we are starved.

In fact, we are not, we are just starved of killer albums and b-sides and annual tours! biggrin

Hes doing is his own thing, it is what drives him, natural. Little Richie Boy should stop bitching. What does this guy anyway? KMart Salesperson of the day?

I love losers who try to get cute.

This is a very good topic you present. I can see both sides of this issue. Yes, like you, I love Prince, and I think that he is the greatest artist in the history of music. However, Little Richard has a good point. Too much music can oversaturate the public to the point that they can get too much of an artist. This has happened before with Prince. Sometimes it is good to let the listening public have some time to miss you before releasing the next album. Diehards want as much new music as possible; however, we don't fill arenas and cause his singles to go up the charts. The average guy\gal does this, and they can overdose on an artist if he releases too much material without allowing the current music to age a little.

To me, any rapid releases by Prince should be confined to the internet. This means that if another album comes out in the next couple of months, then that album should be accessible via his club or other internet outlets. Big commercial projects, like Musicology, should not come back to back in less than a year.

Here is a hypothetical-

What if Prince had, in his career, only released an album once every 2 or 3 years (like a typical pop artist)??

That means we wouldn't have heard "Lovesexy" in 1988 and it would have been well into the 90's before that material came out etc.
"New Power slide...."

I think they need to shut up! If they evewn took the chance and listened to any of his music, they'd be just as enthusiastic about when his next cd comes out as us! They'd be in the stores b4 the cd even comes out! So some of them need to recognize and take a serious listen to what they "think" is to much music being distributed.

Little Richard should shut his big trap. What exactly has he done in the last 20 years that makes his opinion any more relevant than...say...mine?

You can't surpress an artist's creativity. If the music flows through him frequently enough that he'll experiment and release it as an album, then I say go for it.

There was an article in the NY Times about this years ago. The writer indicated that in different genres of music,(e.g. jazz), the artist can but out more than one album per year and the record company releases it. But when it comes to pop music the artist, no matter how prolific, is limited to one album as if the public can't handle it. It is a shame,,,

Back in the day, almost every artist put out an album a year, except for Michael Jackson. Prince just continued after everyone else stopped. Today's artists are too busy trying to milk as many singles as they can before they release another album. It's more about big business now than making music.
