Hey this might be a stupid question. Well im from Denmark and was wondering what purple rain meens because if you translate it to danish just like that it make no sence so what does it means? hope you can help me with this!

I have no idea. It ain't a translation thing though. No one knows what he is actually referring too.....

One theory is based on Prince's focus on The Book of Revelations, i.e. the end of the world or the second coming at the end of The Bible. A lot of Prince's religious stuff focuses on that book. Anyway, at the end of the world the sky will rain with blood. The red of the blood on a blue sky make for purple rain. I like this theory, and it works for me.

why's it purple then? maybe he makes love next to his fav purple lampshade or something?

At some point I heard about it having to do with the apocalyptic color combination resulting from blood (red) smeared against the canvas of the sky (blue) . . . And in that other song: 'the sky was so purple, there were people running everywhere.'

Always assumed that the song was about preferring to envision a loved one smiling/laughing/happy during such a scenario instead of screaming in pain/horror.

yeah it has 2 meanings...this one up here

and this one...purple -color of royalty...combo of red and blue -red<-makes the heart beat fast, mother color (from the Bible), makes you angry, hot, devil... blue<-calms, cools, virgin (from the Bible), angels ...a combo of these 2 colors make purple...balanced color... a complexed man...gemini...2 N one...Rain <-high in the sky, water (sign of life), falls from the sky...like the reign of a king or queen, there is always going to be a ruler but like life, it goes on, a person of royalty replaces eventually...name playing his own name...and in the movie, he had to take his father's place in his castle of music... hence : Purple Rain...

I think you guys are putting way too much thought into it. First of all I read somewhwere that he got the chorus idea (purple rain) from an America song. In the song the guy is stranded on a highway and he says something about purple rain (I checked the lyrics and it's legit). Also I think he created the song to promote crowd participation. The song is simple and you can sing it the first time you hear it. The most memorable songs are always simple. The whoo hoo hoo part is also simple and everyone can sing along. Also I know that he was interested in Hendrix early on. Ever hear a Hendrix song with a similar title....like purple haze maybe? Purple Rain is basically about two friends who got too close and had to end the relationship. I think the rain is just a good image for sadness which is the feeling he wanted to convey. Finally I think he purposefully wrote songs involving color early on.....Purple Rain, Raspberry Beret, Little Red Corvette, and so on..
