SIGN O THE TIMES
DIRTY MIND
LOVESEXY
COME

SIGN O THE TIMES is my favorite PRINCE album (so far)...it's perfect.

DIRTY MIND, i really wanted this cd because everyone said how good it was...but I didn't find anything good about it, it made me fall asleep.

LOVESEXY - there were a few good songs, but I hate that there's only one track and you gotta fast-foward on your cd...it's like a cassette tape. why'd he make his cd that way?

COME - I really like this cd, although some of the songs sound familiar with the same instruments (come, space, letitgo...)

I was expecting DIRTY MIND to be really good, it may have to grow on me... So what should I get next!!!?

Mariah J.

I bought For You, Prince, Dirty Mind and Controversy all at the same time (Tower Records in Boston, Feb 99 if you really want to know - I didn't listen to them until I got back to England though when I played the 4 of them back to back a few times - sounded a bit different to Newpower Soul).

It took me quite a while to get into Dirty Mind and Controversy. Now Dirty Mind is one of my all-time favourite P albums and one day about a year and a half ago I suddenly realised the true genius of Controversy (after a friend who I had turned on to Prince had been telling me how good it was for a couple of years).

Just give it some time.

I always thought it was about his child that died soon after birth. With that in mind, I find it a very beautiful and poignant song.

Yeah that song can be interpretated in so many different ways but I have always loved it especially the line " If life remains a mystery then there is no reason to the rhyme...

Sorry my friend but i have exquisite taste and that album is funky. The link between the musical texture and the lyrics is awesome. Wasted kisses is very good to. Worst album ever was Batman - apart from a few tracks. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

A statement in defense of NPS:

I put NPS on after a long, long period of not listening to it (at least since Musicology came out) and was pleasantly surprised. The vibe is light, and not gimmicky or forced (which cannot be said of Musicology or Rave). It is what it says it is, solid soul music with Prince's signature touches (like the "slithery" horns all over the place).

Sure there are some weak tracks, but not as many as most peole claim, and there's something to at least smile about in almost every Prince song (even the "failed" experiments).

I think it's useful to leave the elevated expectations aside, and take things objectively; in this light, NPS stacks up well against Musicology, as well as many more recent releases by other R+B artists.
.

Hmmm, so the cold, overproduced beats aren't forced? Prince and his band sounding bored and uninspired, while trying to be hip and cool doesn't sound forced at all to you?

Trust me, I've listened to NPS with the lowest possible expectations, but it still sucks.

Every now and then I try to go back and play it, hoping that magically I'll hear it with new lowered expectations and hear a solid album; it never happens.

It's disingenuous, overproduced, plastic, uninspired drivel he can create in his sleep.

It is about his son that died after birth.....that song has THE MOST feeling of ANY song I have heard in my lifetime. Forget the music and arrangement, the LYRICS are (I think ) P's way of digesting and dealing with a heavy heart and pain of losing A LOVED ONE!!! I'm sure that it could be interpreted more than one way, but I've seen Q & A's on this subject, and I'm convinced that this is about his lost child.

It's really about his deceased son? But the song is just so corny.

Don't feel that you have to let it grow on you, you may never get it, I certainly haven't. I like when you were mine, but much prefer the recent live version on One Night Alone Live. People are saying that Dirty Mind was ground breaking and that it led the way into Prince's future music. I just don't feel it. Maybe because I wasn't into it at the time, I didn't get into Prince untill '90/'91 sort of time. I wonder if being there at the time has anything to do with peoples feelings on this album? I can only listen to it in the context of now and in my opinion, it sounds empty and dated.

Some are suggesting that you get 1999 as one of your next albums, but I would suggest that if you don't like Dirty Mind, then 1999 won't do it for you, although there are more good tracks on 1999 and I would certainly place it above DM in the pecking order. For me though, tracks like let's pretend we're married, delirious, lady cab driver and all the critics love you, do nothing for me, I get that Dirty Mind feeling from them. I am sure that people will come along and say, blasphemy! 1999 was ground breaking, in it's time, etc. Yet I can still only listen to it from todays perspective and just say what I see. It's just the sounds and production that does it really, when I heard Delirious live on the New Power Soul tour it was one of the highlights. I loved it so much that it was one of the standout moments of that show, so when I came on I played it wondering how I could have missed out on it for so long. Unfortunately, I hadn't missed out, I just don't like the album version. DMSR is another one that I never really got.

I would never say don't get 1999 as there are some great tracks there, I would just say to maybe hold off for a bit.

So, what would my next choices be?

1) Prince, in my opinion easily the best of his early albums.
2) Purple Rain, a great album which is sometimes overlooked here, probably due ot the commercial success? This is obviously the highlight of Prince's carreer in terms of commercial success and the album is thoroughly deserving of it's status.
3) The Gold Experience, this album was criminally overlooked by the media and general public. It is probably my most played Prince album and one of the ones where I never skip a track. It's a real shame that this got lost within the whole Warner Bros, name change fiasco.
4) Around The World In A Day, which is on of my most favourite Prince albums, I just love everything about it.
RIP sad

Yes, it was. How did you know!?! lol

I'm having a difficult time getting real into Diamonds and Pearls and Symbol, even though I do love some Songs off of them, ones I heard perviously to getting the CD's. I'm having more of a difficult time with Symbol.

Around the World in a Day and Dirty Mind, I'm really diggin.

It also took me a really long time to get into prince, but now I consider it a 4/5 star album. Great ballads and some really funky, addictive pop songs. Let it grow on you, it might take some time. There's a lot there on that album to take in overall, so just let yourself take it in really slowly. It's not on the same level as a Dirty Mind or Around, but it's got a level of ingenuity for sure.

I agree, I have to give it a chance, which I really haven't done. It's
definately more complex, that's for sure. I just haven't taken the time,
just listening to what I really know.....there are some Songs on there
that I do love already, so hopefully the rest will follow.....not necessarily
that I will love it all but that it will become more easy to listen to.

Different strokes ..... I personally very rarely listen to Sign of the Times, Purple Rain, Grafitti Bridge or Rave.
