Prince's androgony

What era do you think Prince played most with his androgony and which did he downplay it the most?

The most- The Prince album of '79. I don't blame people for thinking he was gay back then, I probably would have thought so too.

The Least- Diamonds and Pearls era-Goodness he looked just like a pimp off of Lake street( Minneapolis' pimp daddy street).

I think the most androgonous I have ever seen Prince would be the "Prince" 1979 era. On "American Bandstand", he had the full straight hair and he was slinging and flipping it constantly. He was all up on Dez on the microphone. During the interview, when he introduced the band, he had his hand on his hip and threw his hand way up in the air and pointed to each member. Prince was fish as hell back then.

I think the least androgonous was the very next year, the "Dirty Mind" era. Prince still looked feminine (hell, he can't help that...that's just who he is) but he looked more "wild". He didn't wear clothes, just a trench coat and underwear and his hair was messed up like he just didn't give a damn. He had a very arrogant attitude.

These two eras also worked very well back to back.

I think he played that androgynous look during his Lovesexy era - just look at the album cover. As for him downplaying that look, I would say he looks his most masculine now.

I'm with you on this one. All those polka dots and frills and curls - the Musicology suits are mainstream in comparison...although they still don't come close to the average suit - much more fitted with interesting little features (those wraparound lapels etc) - and now...the most recent white outfit at the People's Choice seems to be a wee glimpse of some earlier inclinations as discussed on some other threads. cool

I think he's played with it the least during the Parade era and in the past few years -ONA, TRC, Musicology, etc. A shame really. neutral

When he's played with it the most depends on how you're judging it, I guess. It's a toss-up between 1978-1980, Purple Rain, Lovesexy, and a few moments here and there druing the 90's.

I definitely agree that Prince is a man who explores his feminine side but the other thing is that it took me all these years to understand that his look is about compensating for being short!!

My friend pointed that out to me. I was looking at a performance of his from the Dirty Mind era and he really looked ridiculous. It was like a joke. He was on stage strutting his stuff with those ugly legwarmers, boots and trench coat. Then he was hopping around like a horny rabbit BUT the MUSIC was so TOUGH and he is so FUNKY that it was HOT. It took me a while to understand the need to coordinate your visuals right when you are selling yourself. He freely admits today that he only did those things for marketing reasons. Then I think about that funny story when Bob Marley went to meet him and ran away when he saw his feminine gear. I mean Prince really has a dark sense of humor to me.....even when it comes to looks.

Remember the interview when he had that thing on his face and whispered to Mayte. I remember in the '90s when he sent out that press release about his 'Tornado' hairstyle. Does anyone remember this... lol

The man is a GENIUS.

I think he looked gay during the parade era. He looked like a gay man going to a ball and posing as something else.

Prince never stoped the glam androgony look after the 80s. Prince was totally 80s glam in the 90s when everybody else was all grungy and street.
Goodnight, sweet Prince.
