I don't know if there's a list. But he has sampled:

Tower of Power's drum intro to "Squib Cakes" for a Time song on the Grafitti Bridge album

Mitch Mitchell's drum intro from "Little Miss Lover" by Jimi Hendrix

And "Tramp" by Otis Redding for the song "7".

I'm not aware of any other samples off the top of my head.
This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

Jame's Brown... "Mother Popcorn" on "Gett Off"

I'm sure there are probably a couple of others that I'm missing.

The really REALLY cool thing about Prince though is that he often samples unreleased songs from his own vault! Now that's original!

The weirdest thing he has ever sampled was "Buong Suong" by the Vietnamese Royal Palace Choir Ensemble (or something). He used it in context of a concert outro collage in the early 90s, I believe.

Sod it, he just probably got the idea from Pat Metheny. It's a really beautiful composition though.

The song "Gett Off" features an uncredited bass loop from the 1990 EnVogue hit "Hold On".Play those two songs back to back and you can hear it.

Didn't he sample Fishbone on Billy Ass Bitch? From memory, that contained a couple of other samples 2.

Oh, and "I wanna B your lover" on "My Name is Prince" by some artist who's name escapes me... lol

I like the way he ripped off the bassline from Rock Steady by Aretha Franklin. Listen to Daddy Pop and Rock Steady and say; "Jamie Starr is a thief"

Just downloaded Otis Redding's 'Tramp' and yep, that's definitely where '7' comes from. At least he does have the decency to say so in the symbol album's sleeve notes.

This reminds me- has anyone heard the long version of Pigeonhed's song "Battle Flag?" It was a hit last year and was on the second Sopranos soundtrack. It features a long sample of the Sexuality rap. Well not a sample he actually raps it. It's pretty cool and funky song I'm sure you'll know it when you download it.

Wow... you actually had to download "Tramp" to know what it sounded like? Interesting... especially considering the fact that Salt & Peppa used the same sample to create their own hit.

Surprisingly, not everyone's a huge fan of Salt N Pepa. Which decade was 'Tramp' a hit for them?

I guess he was surprised that you didn't know the original from Otis, not just from Salt N Pepa!

I've always heard the similarities, but it may not be the EXACT same bass line. It might be tweaked in a way so that it's not exactly the same thing and that's why it's not "credited". But at any rate, it IS a rip off! smile

On the song "Right Back Here In My Arms",isn't that Queen Latifah saying "Cuz that's my only mission"? Is that a sample from one of her songs?
