NPS - put your headphones on and you'll get a good old prince eargasm, right on!

some of it you might wont like that much, but damn its not a simple side-effect of a release. its experimental, strange, breathtaking, funny, witty, with lots of hooks. had this been a debut from some new artist people would be freakin ! beck would never ever be able to do anything like this, or usher or d'angelo or other wanna-be-acts.... though they're allright anyway.

NPS is a masterpiece of STRANGE FUNK, good horns, funny melodies intertwining, lots of silly lyrics, but lazy funk put to tape by the master.

would prince make a NPS2 as a followup to musicology it would be awsome.

so get your headphones straight on !!

"Until you're in my arms again" . is so much a prince ballad as any other you would pick in his collection. could have been as big a hit as the most beautiful girl in the world.
the only reason it wasn't, is the fact that prince chose to be away from the spotlight in a decent amount of years. the material is as good as it was ever.

the fact that he is back is quite damn phat, cause its awsome to share prince with not just a little amount of diehard fans, but with the whole world. funny to read what journalists mean, funny to read comments on shows and reviews.

but all along prince has been releasing classic prince music.

so NOW get your headphones on!!!

lol Well, maybe you´re joking, or maybe we´re really the only people who seriously like this little gem of a side project...
I mean, judging by the amount of songs I really like, on a " how many good songs on this album " kind of ratio, I would say I honestly enjoy:
1 Wasted Kisses
2 The One
3 Come On
4 Freaks On This Side
These are four songs that are up there with any other "real" Prince songs I like.
And then you have :
5 When U Love Somebody
6 Until Ure In My Arms Again
7 Shobedooh.....which are all nice songs. biggrin
and the list goes on :
8 Mad Sex ..... is kinda filler and dated ( Mel B reference) and way too personal and braggado-macho, but still OK
9 Push It Up ...well, not my cup of tea
10 New Power Soul ...too weak to be a title track
11 I Like Funky Music .I can´t stand this song !! confused mad mad confused neutral eek

But all in all, that´s more nice songs and less filler than on the prince album or Diamonds and Pearls, which I both also liked , but like I said, based on a ratio of songs I really like, NPS is kool.
Then again, the good songs on the albums above are so incredibly good ( Live 4 Love, Strollin, Get Off, 7, And God created Woman, Morning Papers, Insatiable) that NPS does look a bit pale in comparison, but hey, I like´em all .

If NPS woulda been a rookie album people would have crapped themselves over it. Now because Prince has ben around so long people's expectations are so varied and all over the map that he'll never be able to satisfy everyone-only himself. Musicology was a hit and critically acclaimed and it seems like half of the people here don't like it. Hell, Prince could release SOTT today and some people here wouldn't like it.

Very true, very true... BTW, can't believe we've got yet another NPS thread going!!

Pagey

I got into this album cause it was stuck in my mini-disc player for 3 months and I couldn't get it out. I have to admit I HATED this album when it came out but put it on a disc anyway. Well, the next day, while running, I dropped my player and it was STUCK. I GOTTA run with tunes so I would just grab it and go. WELL...now I love it. Great stuff going on in the background...esp the title track. Its nowhere near my favorite prince albums but its good...not near as bad as people here say.

It's Prince's "Glitter" I loved Mariah's Glitter (except for the ones with rappers in it) and I loved New Power Soul (except for Freaks On This Side, Shoo Be Doo and Push It Up).

Wasted kisses
When You Love Somebody
Mad Sex is ok
Funky Music is Jammin!
New Power Soul is a private fan only cut (I dont like the rap part mch..trying to be like "Push").
Come On is nice too.
The One is simply beautiful!!!

I think the album is better than "Xenophobia" (Whis is a good album too), "Prince" (sorry too boring for me), Around The World In A Day (sorry but it is just tame and is meant to be misunderstood).

Album plays and love for vinyl records.

This album is probably the single most under-rated thing Prince has ever done, IMO.

It's funky, it's fun, it makes you wanna dance... what makes you wanna do that on Musicology? I don't mind the Musicology album, but it sure ain't got any funk on it (and for the record, Life O The Party is weaker than anything on NPS).

The title track is a wonderful record. It's got the horns, it's got the trumpets... it's sheer funk!

The piano part in Mad Sex is a stroke of genius! Would've been a huge hit if it was released as a single by a major label.

Okay, tracks such as I Like Funky Music and Push It Up ain't no When Doves Cry. But it's just a fun party record and it ain't trying to be anything else!

New Power Soul is definately my favourite Prince record of the 90s. And I rank it way above Around The World In A Day, Prince, Dirty Mind, Controversy and For You.

Shoot me.

"The One" is my favorite ballad right now. Truly an under-rated song.

to each their own i guess.....
Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!
woot!

Yes, it's true - his greatest album of the 90s. No question.

I'll second that. I think "The One" is one of those Prince classics that gets a better reputation with age. Went to a party recently and somebody played it, I was surprised that everyone seemed to know the words.

but the album as a whole blows

I do like it more than Around The World In A DAy and Prince, maybe even Come too nod oh and more than the Vault too.

And u right other than Musicology and Life O The Party there is nothing to dance to on the album, ur right on that one, but I still accept it as a great record.

Soon, we'll be hearing about how A Tribute To Miles was the best silence ever recorded.

Hmmm. It certainly had more clarity than the John Cage interpretations.
