There are some very dated and cringe worthy moments on NPS..but I take NPS for what it is...Mad Sex,The One,Wasted Kisses and Come On are very enjoyable listens....I even think Freaks On This Side, given the right moood, will induce a serious funky experience.

New Power Soul is funkier then Parade! Parade is all jazzy orchestrations and acoustic folk music (Sometimes It Snows in April), not what you want from a Prince album. I want rock & soul-funk from a Prince album. The only funk on Parade is just 3 songs: New Position, Girls & Boys and Kiss. New Power Soul has Mad Sex, Shoo-Bed-Ooh, Freaks On This Side, Come On and I Like Funky Music. Parade is weak on the funk. New Power Soul is funky.
Goodnight, sweet Prince.

Let me set the stage for you guys, it was 1998 was loving the gold experience, liking C&D and Emancipation, and had mixed reviews about Crystal ball. So I was hungry for some new Prince music, then he released NPS in July, after I listened to it start to finish (thats the only way i can judge an album) I was like "OH MY GOD..WTF is this???? I never listen to it again, that is until last night...I respect all my orgers here opinion, some like it, some hate it.

My boy Prince was seriously confused with this album, I listen to the 1st 2 songs and it was like 1998 all over again, I couldn't stand it anymore, I put the window down and out it went!!!

the songs, Larry, him trying to be hip hop, ugggghhhhh

I hope you didn't hit any passers-by with it.
It could injure a small child!
(especially if they took it home and played it) razz

Come on now it is bad but not worse than Kamasutra. That was the worst elevator music in the world. Don't Blame Larry because you know P has the final say on everything. but truth be told this one is a frisbee.

Great songs on there (except for Push It Up, Freaks On This Side)
Straight Jacket Funk Affair
Album plays and love for vinyl records.

Great songs include PushitUp....but i agree with the poor quality, maybe prince was trying to say something by it? maybe... does anyone know anything about the promo of the cd or the TOUR perhaps?

Well, yes. Yes it is. One of the worst songs Prince has ever written compared to one ofthe best singles released in the 90s, I'd say it really is THAT much worse.

i remember the BBC2 interveiw with Kevin Greening(?) when P was promoting NPS

"Who tells you when your work is substandard?"

Prince(screwing face up) - "substandard???,,pointing to Kevins shirt "is that a substandard shirt? is it my place to say that"
Kevin - "well i like it!"

Prince - "ah you like it..there you go"

so Prince was comparing Kevin Greenings horrible green shirt to NPS.

taa-daa.
Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!

I never got into Prince 'cause i thought he was "funky". Funnily enough it was when he started becoming out and out "funky" i started disliking more and more what he did. He always had such a crazy mix of music you didn't really know where it was coming from. I think i'm actually starting to agree with Vain Andy. Take Let's Pretend We're Married then listen to ANYTHING on NPS.....
Other people do "funky" much "funkier" than Prince. But no one comes close to Prince being Prince. Compare The One to Scandalous or International Lover and tell me hand on heart it's anywhere near what he's capable of. Jeez, i can even imagine Sting singing The One, the music is that lame.
I say well done Cable Guy. Quality Control.

its bearable in places. lots of production decisions were wrong. its not a classic but has some grooves that i could only find with Prince.

but why chuck it out of the window?

i remember finding a hawkwind album on the pavement when i was a kid and i thought that they must be crap if somebody has threw it away. maybe some kid will think the same of prince.

I remember listening to it the first time with really low expectations. I wasn't expecting a classic P album, just a fun party record.

What'd I get instead? Overproduced, plastic bullshit with irritating crowd chant choruses, dumb lyrics, and Prince sounded uninspired most of the time.

It sounds like he didn't put any effort into this album at all.

The music on NPS is every bit as awful as the cover art.

I think this pretty much sums up the whole release.
