Well, I know because it says that in the chorus, so does that mean "Annie Christian" is supposed to be "Anti-Christian", and if so, is Prince against Christianity (I know he is a Jehovah Witness now, but how about back then?)

Not anti-christian. Antichrist as in THE Antichrist. I always took the song to be Prince blaming all the negatives in the world on a lack of faith or the Antichrist if you will. Always loved that he told Annie he would spend his life in taxi cabs and on 1999 he sings to the cab drive. Nice continuing theme betweem albums on the part of Prince back when he was at his peak.

i always took this song to be a comment partly on the culture of fear/partly on the obsession of celebrity. i especially like the line about killing John Lennon,"then she tried to kill Reagan, everybody shouts 'gun control!'". a mixture of paranoia making us put bigger locks on our doors (literally and metaphorically), and a serious comment on the right wing.
i kinda see this song as a precursor to Sign O The Times.

except at the time Prince was kind of right wing politically. I know it sounds weird but somewhere I read a quote by Prince where he said it was good that Reagan got elexted cuz we needed a strong president.

I don't think he knew what he was writing about. His lyrics on this song seem very angry about something.... Fuck knows neutral Great atmospheric track though.

This song is about Love and Fear of God. It represents all controversy and contrasts and the fanaticals of religion. Incessantly it questions the certainty of your/our individual worth in your mind and as others see you.
Will you die for love? of (blank)? Is about all us.Love does not end, even when we are not aware.

LOVE YOU TILL YOU DEAD

The live versions from the Controversy tour are absolutely mind blowing. He turns it into a metal song and tears shit up.

Exactly. The song touches on several disturbing events that happened during the late 70's early 80's: the murder of John Lennon, the attempted assasination of then president Ronald Reagan, the serial killing of several black children in Atlanta, the Abscam fiasco.

I was about to get very irritated with your question until I looked at your profile and noticed you weren't even born then. smile

Similar to the brown note...all hell would break loose in the audience. Better hope no one lights a match or the arena would blow up.

I listened to this track about 4 times in a row after reading this thread. I never realized how good it is. I totally slept this song. The beat, guitar work and vocal layering are all on point. Classic Prince!!!
