I'm not quite sure what they are saying in this song...is it bashing Christianity...? I don't understand.

Not anti-christian. Antichrist as in THE Antichrist. I always took the song to be Prince blaming all the negatives in the world on a lack of faith or the Antichrist if you will. Always loved that he told Annie he would spend his life in taxi cabs and on 1999 he sings to the cab drive. Nice continuing theme betweem albums on the part of Prince back when he was at his peak.

that was a wierd song, i think he was high or something but i liked it especially the guitar lick at the end.

i always took this song to be a comment partly on the culture of fear/partly on the obsession of celebrity. i especially like the line about killing John Lennon,"then she tried to kill Reagan, everybody shouts 'gun control!'". a mixture of paranoia making us put bigger locks on our doors (literally and metaphorically), and a serious comment on the right wing.
i kinda see this song as a precursor to Sign O The Times.

This song is about Love and Fear of God. It represents all controversy and contrasts and the fanaticals of religion. Incessantly it questions the certainty of your/our individual worth in your mind and as others see you.

The live versions from the Controversy tour are absolutely mind blowing. He turns it into a metal song and tears shit up.
