12 inches

dig it. i don't like trc, fucking at all, but i don't see why everyone is turning their back on prince just cuz he made one wack album.
i just signed up here, been lurking for years, and i wanted to put my 2 cents in on the greatest 12 inch versions. i saw this topic awhile back, and if anyone wants to flame me for this, kindly fuck off.

1. anotherloverholenyohead
the sax lines added thoughout add so much to the arrangement. when parade first dropped in '86 i thought the song faded too quick. one of the times when a song NEEDED a 12 inch. does anyone know if it was originally recorded this way, and then altered for the lp, or is this a remix?

2. let's go crazy
i'm sure everyone agrees that this is highly superiour to the album edit. i love the crazy piano in the middle.

3. let's work
reminds me of the 12 inch of super freak, not stylistically, but in a "part one and two" sense. very cool and should have been on the lp this way.

4. sexy dancer
i refuse to listen to the album version of this. the 12 inch is the real joint, and the guitar solo kills me everytime.

5. i wish u heaven (part 1,2,3)
reminds me of the time when prince could kick the "spiritual noise" which making you feel left out and bemused if you didn't totally agree. great fun. "sheila, have the choir hit a long note!"

6. i would die 4 u
i love to play this for casual prince fans. they always hate it. i will die loving the horn work in this version.

7. mountains
seems a lot longer than 10 minutes.... but anyway a great showcase for the 1986 band. wasn't this matt blistan's audition? the reason i don't turn the cherry moon video off when the credits start.

8. u got the look
the extended portion could have been edited in a little better, the transition seems a little jarring to my ears (when it goes into the whistling part). still one of the best versions, and i love the full ending, always hated the way it fades on the lp, and ya know you can't fuck with the extended intro either, too funky. crucial!

9. little red corvette
definately my favourite 12 inch. great guitar breakdown in the middle. great extended portion at the end "mayday!!" what's neat about it is how it's both a remix and an extended version, you dig? (the added instrumentation throughout .. and that guitar breakdown in the middle is obviously a mixdown, not played that way... and then there's that scream! i was overjoyed the first time mojo (mfa members holla at me) played the 12, and it didn't fade there....whatever)

10. america
not that it's really that great, it gets boring around the 12 minute mark, but it holds a special place on my shelf just cuz of the following: if i have a houseful of people, and i decide it's time to go home, but i don't want to rude about it, i just put on the america 12 inch. it has never failed to clear the room within 15 minutes. housequake my ass....

whatever. it's late and i just wanted to share. folks listed their favourites but didn't say why, so i did.
notice i didn't include any b-sides. i'm of the school that the b-sides weren't really extended, but actually unedited. whatever.
goodnight.

luv,
alx

Smokeverbs;

I really dig all the ones you listed, definately some of his best jams. Here are a few more that I really like:

Love or $: Just funky as hell, especially the baritone sax!

LaLaLa Hee hee hee: Prince at his best, in my opinion. The b-side single is ok, but the 12 is the shit!

Housequake: Mostly an instramental take on this funk jam, but funky as George Clinton's armpit.

Alphabet St(This is not music, this is a trip): Another instrmental type jam, which really allows the true funkiness of this song to come out!

Thieves in The Temple: The extented version becomes and entirely different song! Awesome

Gett Off(Violet the Organ Grinder) The funkiest of the Gett Off Remixes IMO.

Come On = Prince raps alot on this , but it's still pretty damn funky. "if you come to party let's bounce! Whoooaaaaa bounce!"

shit! how could i forget thieves in the temple? an unbelievable track on the 12 inch.... just kills me everytime.

i didn't include "she's always in my hair" because, while it is a wonderful tune, i was speaking of a-sides.

what about the 12" version of Shockadelica?

That absolutely knocks the edit off it's socks. Together with the 'She's Always In My Hair" 12" those 2 are among the best songs of Prince.

"You'll be lickin' on my guitar - Nasty Bitch!" smile

I'm not even sure if it was released officially, but I've downloaded it since those old singles aren't available anymore.

The Paisley Park & Raspberry Beret 12" are cool too. The guitar on PP is great and the funky intro and outro on RB is just sick. I never liked that song until I heard that full version.

The 12 inch to Shockadelica was released on the maxi single to IIWYG. It definatley kicks major bootay!

I like the 12 to Poplife too. The edit was cool enough, but the extended verisons are cool.

MisterMcDab

I have to say that I loved all his 12" releases in the 80's.
(up to Graffiti Bridge barring the House mix of "Thieves in the Temple").
I just wanna give a mention to "Space" (Universal Love Remix) because it's the only 12" version I really liked in the 90's.

yes yes yes, but we're talking about extended mixes of album cuts ... the b-sides we're not extended, they we're unedited....

i find the 1985 12 inch a-sides to be boring. i know this is probably sacriligious, but except for "america" they all followed the exact same format: an extended intro, followed by the album version, followed by a repeat of the extended intro. or to put it in a simpler way: go listen, right now, to the extended mixes of raspberry beret and paisley park, the intros and outros are identical. sounds like they rushed it. i also prefer the uk mix of pop life, anyone else?

i wanna be your lover is not extended, but wonderful nonetheless. i dig love bizarre, but 12 minutes of it? too repetitious, the could have jammed more like in the 9 minute version of the glamourous life.... what do ya'll think?

Man, I saw the title of this thread and was hoping that us ladies were finally gonna catch a glimpse of the King's Sausage. We were FINALLY gonna meet the meat. No go. Bummer.
