What the hell happened to Face Down?

Why did this song disappear so quickly when it was released? It's funky and it's got a helluva hook; that beat is just awesome. Even the video's pretty cool.

Did it not get any promotion at all or did ppl just not dig it?

It was only released as a promo single, but with remixes. Great track.

Wow, that's a damn shame. I remember the video always being played on MuchMusic here in Canada. I actually first heard the song cause my sister downloaded it off Napster and I found it on our Windows Media Player. I loved it from the beginning...Me thinks this song could've been a big hit...

I feel the exact same way. This song has got SO much classic attitude. It's vintage Royal Badness.

When I finally saw the vid long after it came out, I loved that too.

Especially that cool ass move where they show a side shot of The Kid grooving to the song and tapping his heels to the beat with perfect rhythm.

Hahha, or when he plays the violin with that hilarious giant grin on his face. lol

It's all classic Prince to me.
cool

EMI, the label that distributed Emancipation, went under a week after the video was released. Prince decided not to find another label to distribute it, so he left Emancipation dead in the water after that.

With no label to support the single, it quickly fell xcept for the promo copies which came out before the label's demise.

The 1st song on the Face Down vinyl is "Eye Can't Make u Love Me", which the label wanted as the next single as it was getting play on A/C stations. Prince declined and wanted Face Down although the song stayed on the vinyl.

loved seeing him kid around with the sax in the video as well -- it was an inside joke for some fans who just had a discussion about him playing sax at the time. now, if he ever played a sax solo for real, i think i would faint

fun video to a funky lil' beat

Actually, the vid was edited, and the single was due out just as he was entering his "no cussin" phase. The remixes of the song were either edited, or had new vocals that changed the lyrics.

I don't think that was to do with the "no cussin" thing yet.

it was more likely a marketing decision since the album was

not doing that well (despite Prince's usual antics about how

well his projects fare) and so he probably had very high set

expectations for this single. and for it to do well it would

need to be played a lot and without cursing it would do just

that.

it's a real shame the label folded just then and not just a

few months later. I think this would have been quite a nice

decent size hit for him.

I was just listening to one of the remixes of this song (vinyl blister remix) and its probably the WEIRDEST remix of Prince song ever... it actually makes me hate the song. I gotta listen to the original to get that sound out of my head.
Change it one more time..

The "Money" remix has entirely re-sung lyrics and drops the "dead like Elvis" sample. He turned it into more of a pussy eating song.

I love this song.

The "dead like Elvis" is a a sample from an unreleased Poet99 track recorded several years earlier. I think he just liked the sound of it and there is no Elvis hating about it per se. I mean, he is fucking dead right?

the highlight of the JOTY tour was prince doing a 15 minute version of that song live. Him and Rhonda playing the shit out of the bass. I still have my T shirt. I love wearing it to work : )
