There are several cues, some obvious, some very subtle.

In the recently released 20th anniversary edition DVD of Purple Rain, during the video footage for I Would Die 4 U/Baby, I'm A Star, there's a point during Baby..., when Prince and the band are in a tight groove, and he gives Eddie a solo. He says, "New Power, Eddie, G"

This means he wants Eddie to do a solo in the key of G.

There's also a point on the bootleg afterparty show for Lovesexy, during Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic, when he switches between that song and It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night, when he just shouts out "B!" and the whole band goes into B.

During the Prince & the Revolution Live, in possessed, when he gives the band the silent "on the 1", by putting one finger up in the air, and then during the pause, puts up 2 fingers right quick.

Prince's cues are more like what a bandleader or choir director would do in the middle of the song - meant to go with the flow.

"The ride" from the Aladdin DVD has Sheila on drums instead of John Blackwell. During the 1st verse, she begins to slow down the tempo, for no apparent reason. Prince then starts waving the neck of his guitar (while singing, facing the audience) to show her where the beat's supposed to be.

I think it's funny because it's so obvious, and for a musician (especially a drummer) it's really embarrassing when that kind of thing happens...
