Prince:rock, rap, jazz, pop, funk, blues,soul...... why does Prince seem to be stuck in some funk/rap/jazz dilemma recently? Whatever happened to the man who would play whatever genre he felt suited the song? What happened to the songs? Xenophobia is just jazz-fusion musical masturbation at it's worse, where are the new songs to uplift and inspire, instead of trying to control our minds with psycho-babbling or anything not whinging about how warners left him skint and destitute(yeah, right!)
surely we loyal devotees deserve better than the water-treading rubbish he's spouted lately, I mean, The Rainbow Children , great album ,but, why do we have to listen to him preach to us like a demented priest? Warners would have told him to take off the low voice and lighten up a little! He needs to find someone who'll tell him the truth, instead of surrounding himself with people who tell him how great he is every day. A little creative editing would not go amiss, don't you agree?

No I don't agree, if you don't like his new direction then don't listen, plain & simple!!!!!

Prince is a true artist & he plays from the heart. Sometimes the results piss off his fans, sometimes they inspire, & sometimes they just leave them plain confused. But I would rather have that than have the current "pop flavor of the month artist" whose only true goal is to have a no.1 hit.

Good points, to be sure, but, where are the new songs that you can play to your non-prince fan friends to let them see his genius?

I think TRC is a new direction...nothing like he's released lately. No Kirky J drum programming, real instruments. If you can't feel TRC then I think you better leave now! (The War).

I love The Rainbow Children. The funk/rap/jazz thing is cool for me.
Still, it's just one album. How could he be "stuck'' in the funk/rap/jazz thing and it's only one album? I don't think he's going to change up in mid-tour here. At least wait till he actually does the same thing again before you call him "stuck'' in anything.

Wow- interesting points...I also like The Rainbow Children a lot, and Xenophobia sounds really cool too, but I do miss the days when Prince simply had no genre- when every album was a serious departure from the previous one. I think Prince realizes that the black crowd has and will remain faithful to him and therefore is trying to appeal to them a bit. However, whatever direction he takes, I'll be quick to follow.

I love everything he's done. Maybe not at first, but, it grew on me. And ya, trying to get people who are not fans to listen to it now has been hard for me. Several people I know who I thought were huge fans don't like him now. At least not his new stuff. I let them know they are not true, loyal fans them. I can do without preaching, but,to listen to him is alttle different to me. I would prefer alittle old Prince mixed with the new Prince, but, I will take it any way I can get it. I just love his voice, he makes everything sound good!!!

Mackopolis, as far as the non-Prince fans go, I don't think you're going to find a song (or songs) that everyone will universally point to & agree that Prince is a genius. He's done so many styles & has so many facets that his entire body of work (from the old to the new) has to be examined.
I find a lot of the new jazzy stuff extremely refreshing & I think a lot of the stuff on TRC is mind-blowing. Then there are others here at the Org that think it's pure crap. Tastes in music are just so diverse that not even a great artist like Prince is going to please everyone all the time. I've never had the desire to convince others that Prince is a genius. They can think what they want. All I know is that I've been on this ride for 19 years now, enjoyed (almost) every moment of it & know one can make me think otherwise.

Alot of my hippy phish head phriends really dig Rainbow Children and the stuff I've played for them off Xenophobia. They really dig the jam element he's been working in since 1998 or so.
