Emmanicaption ONLY $6.99 @ Rite Aid

Ya know, when eye moved in2 my apt. here at Michigan State Univeristy eye went across the street to Rite Aid (a local drug store) for some stuff & eye was lookin through the CD bin and came across Emmancipation. I was pretty sure it was Prince cuz of the sign but it didn't say it anywhere. I decided to risk it cuz it was only $6.99. Anyways, I have not listened 2 it 2 much but eye did think it was ight.

N-E-Ways, eye thought I would tell ya that since eye know so many of ya like that triple CD set.

Ight, so I had, Purple Rain, 1999, Emmanicaption, The Hits, Dimonds & Pearls, Graffiti Bridge & Parade. I just got Lovesexy, Sign'O'Times and The Scandalous Sex Suite...

What should I get next??? I was thinking Rave un2 the Joy Fantasic (cause I also like some of the artist featured on there) and/or Prince (cuz it looks like it would be a good album)

Whatcha think???

Peace
the VILLE
I Just Heard the "Question of U" for the 1st time...MY GOD that is an awsome song. That is #1 right now. I gotta go & listen 2 it again! WoW!

theVille:

You have a VERY good start! Next on your list of Prince albums would have to be Around The World In A Day.

ATWIAD came out right after Purple Rain. In fact, a lot of the songs were actually written on the Purple Rain tour. Prince was expected to simply ride the Purple Rain wave and put out a "Purple Rain 2" so to speak. He refused to do that, and instead put out ATWIAD, which many critics call "psychedelic".

Around The World In A Day is very spiritual and Eastern sounding, with so many layers you might hear something new every time you listen to it. It's just great - and the artwork is very unique. The characters on the cover art all represent characters in the songs and/or The Revolution.

It's got Raspberry Beret and Pop Life on it, which are 2 of his greatest songs. The album has a mix of pop, ballad, political, sex, and spiritual/religious songs.

P.S. If you can, listen to this first with really good headphones on . . .

that is a good start! i got emancipation for the same reason, it's 6.99 alot of places, and my first reaction was what the hell is this crap. that's cause i only heard a few prince albums, and didn't really realize that they have to grow on you. Emancipation is now one of my favorite albums. I would recommend ATWIAD next as well. I didn't really like Rave too much, i dunno why. Rainbow Children is gold.

No wonder it was $6.99 at Rite Aid. It's because it was 'Emmancipation', and not Emancipation. I knew there had to be a catch to it. biggrin

I'm feeling a bit ripped off, I bought Emancipation last summer at Camelot music for $9.99. I had to bum $10 off my grandma...

ReleaseIt

To follow up these thread, Big Lots/Odd Lots has Emancipation for $6.99 also. It must be nice for the "new" fans to buy all these albums at low, low prices. We "old-timers" had to pay around $34.99 for that album in '96.

I hope you're lovin it, you just sold your soul to the devil.

DavidEye, I've seen Emacipation for $6.99 or $7.99 at Rite Aid many times in their CD Bins which are usually up front.

I also remember seeing The Greatest Romance Ever Sold-the Single being sold at the counter of some 7-Elevens when they came out.

I too wonder how they are able to do this. Maybe somoene inside the biz here can explain how it works with retailers like CVS and Rite Aid and how that all works out.

I've also seen Emancipation on sale at Kemp Mill Records and the stores that used to be called Waxie Maxie's ( I forgot who bought them out) for $6.99 and $7.99 too.

I've also seen Emancipation on cassette at some of these stores for about the same price or alil less.

Some of them are what is called "Cut-Outs" meaning they didn't sell that well when whichever store was selling them so they sell them at a reduced price. Most of the smaller chains have Cut Out sections Tower does it sometimes too!

Seems like alomost everybody is getting into selling soem form of CD's these days! Next?! Pizza Hut!!! lol. I think McDonalds was selling N'Sync or Backstreet Boys CD's last summer too! Good Lawd, who's next? I think in business its called cross marketing or cross branding a product or a 'tie-in".

Hope this was a lil helpful.

peace!

I WORK IN THE INDUSTRY...

"Emancipation" has been out-of-print for a couple years now. When there is outstanding stock...it is simply placed in "cut-out" status and sold to vendors who supply retailers with such titles. I used to be the music buyer at a Virgin Megastore and I dealt with ONE WAY DISTRIBUTION and they specialized in selling cut-out titles for our "Bargain Bin"....You'll notice that the original bar code is covered with a makeshift one by the distributor or retailer. These no longer report to soundscan and are basically marked down until stock has sold out. At Virgin...we would keep the bargain bins fresh by changing it out every 6 months and we'd get a new slew of bargain product...there's always a "GEM" among all the CRAP (and believe me there is some SHIT!--T'Pau anyone!!!! Tony Orlando live in Memphis???? C'mon!!!) The "Symbol" album was in cut-out status for some time as well but I have since noticed that Warner has re-issued it (the the same form) into their catalog...They should re-release GOLD EXPERIENCE....anyway.....I'm done

I remember buying the limited-edition 'Symbol'CD (in a gold box) for only $10.It was in the cut-out bin at a Sam Goody store. This was in 1996,but in 1992 when it was released,it was going for $30,if I remember correctly.

Is the Rite Aid copy of Emmancipation the "clean" version?
I saw it there a month ago for $9.99 (alas I bought this album a year after it had been released and was happy to have paid "only" $25.00).

as for theVille:

you MUST get the prince album for your collection. It's a must-have for any Prince fan.

If I was U I Would hurry to the wrecka stow and buy Gold Experiance.

Man such many cool songs. Shy, Gold, TMBGITW, Dolphin, BJB, 319, P. Control. It is definately a must.

ATWIAD is also a must.

If U stumble over the gold single. Buy it as well. The b-side is "Rock'n Roll is alive (and it lives in minneapolis)"
which is a respond to Lenny Kravitz who wrote a song called "Rock'n Roll is dead".

Good hunting.

Hey Ash - nice to see another uk fan.

What to buy first? well i think the 86-88 period was best (u've already got my favorite prince album - SOTT), so I think you should get Parade and Lovesexy next - and I think they should both be fairly cheap. After that, it would really be worthwhile to get the hits 1/2/b-sides triple CD - the b-sides disc is brilliant. You might want to try the NPG album 'exodus' - prince pretty much wrote and played it all, and its funky in an odd kinda way.

i love prince videos almost as much as the albums - u should definitely try the sott video. its a mainly concert video with most of the album on it - and a brilliant version of 'forever in my life'. there used to be a double lovesexy concert vidoe available too - i got mine a year or two ago, but it might still be available. definitely worth a look - all of lovesexy and loads of hits on it.

hope that helps - ps is the rave video any good? i've been wondering about getting it.

i really like the rave video, but i havent seen any other concert footage (except the gold/beautifal experience-whats it called again?) to compare it to, but i think its amazing.

so where abouts in the uk are you ?

From manchester originally, now hanging about near Edinburgh. I know what you mean about the money thing - the one good think about Prince slipping out the charts is bargain bin CDs! I had to wait until March to afford TRC (course it didn't help I had to fork out £20 for it).

I think i might get the Rave video, i've not seen much of his newest stuff live yet. the best live vid i've seen is a really old one, from the Purple Rain tour. you can only get it second hand now, and i'm still hunting for it. its amazing, and has a 25 minute version of Purple Rain at the end that makes the hairs stand up on the back of your neck.

so where in uk r u?
