Certainly chopping up the concert didn't help - like most concerts, his are designed to have an ebb and flow, brought about by years of experience of what works, but by cutting out some of the best stuff, that flow is destroyed and the concert just feels a bit... artificial. I think this is proved by the fact that people who were there thought it was a great concert. Nothing wrong with the performance, just the editing and direction.
I agree totally. It was this plus the sheer crappy quality of the picture and sound that removed all the "atmosphere" that is so important with a live recording. When I read about the evils of drinking, I gave up reading.

I've watched it loads and am amazed that some of you preferred the Rave concert. I've said it many times before but Rave is easily the worst P performance I've seen. The Vegas show is the best I've seen since the '88 shows. So he isn't wearing weird shit and doing splits, he's in his forties and concentrating on the music rather than the spectacle. I love it to bits - probably my favourite P product of the last 10 yrs at least.

All the bucks? He's been a millionaire since at least PR days. I can't believe he couldn't invest to make sure his products are always tight. BTW, I just got the ONA live boxset and I am really digging it. Light-years from the Alladin DVD mess. It makes me wish I were there. Damn that fight with WBs. I didn't even KNOW about the album or the concert and I'm a big Prince fan. Not that I was scoping out or anything, but, come on, the average fan should have at least heard something about it. I'm peeved about that one. But now I'm pissed that I'm back on point, along with millions of others who are just now getting hip since PR. It's like the For Your/Controvery/1999 fans must have felt when PR came out. Come here, babe.. yeah...

What took you so long?" Much as the fans who have stuck out the past few years can say, "You think Musicology is good? Man, you missed One Nite Alone, The Rainbow Children and ONA Live. What took you so long to come back?" At least that's what I think he's trying to say

altavista said: My people, I just finished watching the Alladin DVD from a couple of years ago. I gotta tell you, I was extremely disappointed. I can't really pinpoint why.
He seemed to be trying really hard, constantly saying "Come on, band. Come on y'all, get on your feet. Come on y'all, sing with me... Turn the house lights up." Very painful to watch. The music or the arrangements or something was really off.... the vibe was not there. Seeing something like this is a reminder of how extraordinary he typically is and how hard that is to achieve. But nobody's perfect. It's a major doozy (along with Grafitti Bridge movie, parts of UTCM, and the Scandalous video, which makes me cringe). The performances was awesome, he does that stuff at live shows to get ppl in the mood, he doesn't overdo it like rappers do, I hate it when its overdone. The performances were overall great! 1+1+1=3, Strollin, U & Me, Whole Lotta Love, oh and Everlasting Now WOW!! What I hate: 1) Shakey camera, the editing and filming was horrible. Bootleg like cams, too much artsy fartsy slow downs for no reason. Yuke 2) Its not the complete show!!! Ppl said it was a great show, but we didn't even get HALF of it. 3) The sound was never worked out. The sound engineer's flaws come out completely on the DVD, not very professional. What are your thoughts? Am I alone in this? As always. if you all have discussed this before, pardon. I couldn't find anything in my search. I know he has a lot of songs, but you'd think he would just make up something cool if he forgot the words just to keep things interesting.
Eeee-gaaadss... he was reading lyrics.. now that disappoints.. I'm with you, baabahope.. (i hate when he shows signs of being human.. I prefer my supernatural fantasy much better!) He was reading lyrics on last year's tour also. I had front row seats for a few of the shows and I could clearly see a hand reaching from below the stage and turning the pages of the lyrics sheets on display on a small floor stand. Although it looked more like he would take a look at the beginning of each song to refresh his memory or something because many times he'd be on one of the far ends of the stage performing.

What took you so long to come back?" At least that's what I think he's trying to say Exactly, leecaldon... To clarify...I've always been a Prince fan, but didn't like a lot of the 90s albums, so I wasn't tracking his movements as closely a I do now. As a result, the ONA tour didn't hit my radar, because it didn't have a big promotion machine behind it. I was making the point, as leecaldon says, that those fans who were hip to Prince from the early days were a bit unhappy (just a bit) to share the Kool-Aid with people who only got hip Prince when PR came out. Before, it was like an insider thing and there was a closer relationship with fans. The feeling was not so much, "what took you so long to get hip," but rather, "damn, why you gotta be in on this ride too?" That's all. I think a lot of us Prince fans feel like he is really special and that the general public can't appreciate the genius the way that we do (snobbery, pure and simple). We hung around through his various incarnations (AWIAD, Lovesexy, Parade -- but I did drop out for part of the 90s, as I said). He's like "ours." People are feeling Prince now with the Musicology album/concert, which is good and bad (for me). I'm really glad he's making great music and kickin ass on the road. On the other hand, it's not such a rarified thing to be a fan anymore. There are probably triple the number of members in the NPGMC, for example. Basically, I'm just kicking myself for missing the ONA tour and "ashamed" that I'm only getting hip at the same time that millions of other have. And I have said this using entirely too many words. Sorry! Nothing too deep. (Also, I'm a she. ) Come here, babe.. yeah...

Of all the Prince concerts that I have on VHS and DVD, this is the worst. I thought I was the only one who thought this way. I never watch this dvd.
