Career wise...obviously Purple Rain led him into the mainstream

Music wise....Sign 'o the Times, I know everyone says it is one of his most experimental but I thought it was important for him to explore funk more. So thank god for that album even though it is not one of my favorites.

Infuental wise...1999, I think the use of synths and the whole pop sound influnced eighties pop music at the time. biggrin
