straight up...i would like some well-thought out reviews of the rainbow children. i don't have it yet b/c i can't get a decent vibe [complete w/ knowledgeable analysis] from anyone about what to expect.

i know there's some sorta jw thang gwanin' but really, the only track i've heard is the work, pt. 1.

is it representative of the rest of the album? what direction does it lean towards: funk or jazz? how well would the album hold up in the middle of an urban mixshow? what are the potential singles and what previous singles could they be compared to.

just the facts, pls.

peace.

You can't judge this album by any one song. The work is probably one of the least interesting on there. If you approach it as a story, you should be fine.

This album kicks ass musically. Hope you find it soon.

That's exactly right: The Work IS one of the least interesting tracks on TRC. It is a nice enough song, but I don't feel like it belongs on TRC. It doesn't flow with the album.

And that's what this album is about --- A FLOW. Listen to it all the way through without interruption, and you'll get it.

Musically, it does kick ass. Lyrically, it is very religious and heavy-handed at times. It is still very interesting though. This album contains some of the tightest guitar and drum work EVER by Prince (which is enough to make you like it).

You might've heard about "the voice". Some people like it, some don't. You'll have to judge for yourself.

I would say that if you're missing any other Prince albums, get those first. Then get TRC.

There's another (in depth) thread on this. Persoanlly, I had to give this one some time and HATED it the first time I heard it. IN depth? OK.

"The Rainbow Children"= Not bad. Different from what I'm use 2 from Prince. Deep voice-vers are annoying.

"Muse 2 the Pharoah"= Great song, especially after hearing him do it live, and a serious counterpunch to D'Angelo, Mazwell, etc.

"Digital Garden"= Meandering Shit

"The Work, Pt1."= U heard it. Nice James Brown send up.

"Everywhere"= Hate it, in spite of some nice musicianship

"The Sensual Everafter" = Not into it.

"mellow"= Love it. Nice flutes. Cool mood.

"1+1+1 is 3" = Best song on the disc. Nice throwback to old-school Prince, and the type of music I listen to him 4.

"Deconstruciton"= Not even a song, really. More deep voiced "philosiphizing"

"Wedding Feast"- Rediculous. See above.

"She Loves More 4 Me" = Awesome slow tempo pop song with inspring lyrics and clever arrangements. The record picks up steam right about here.

"Family Name"= Very cool with a great funky intro. When he works the "voice overs" into the music itself, they're not nearly as annoying.

"Everlasting Now"= Outstanding funk track in the tradition of Sly and the Family Stone. Wonderful 2 hear live.

"Last December"= Nice exit track. Good lyrics with a BLISTERING Hendrix-esque guitar part near the middle that'll really catch u off guard the first time. I'd love to hear a whole Prince record that sounds JUST LIKE THAT PART.

Hm. Not such a glowing review, but there are elements of genious in this record. I like it's overall "live" sound and the work of his bamd (especially Balckwell) is impeccable. I'd pick it up, and if I worked for SPIN or something, give it 3 1/2 stars. Better than Rave,U just have to hunt for the treasures. ALL of these songs sound better in concert than on CD.

TRC is not a commercial album. It is almost "experimental" and just for the true fans.

It leans HEAVILY toward jazz - but even contained in the jazz is rock, gospel, and R&B. There is NO POP on this album. None. It' the polar opposite of Rave.

"Family Man"(production, sound, voices, geniuswork) can repeat on my cd player...and indeed it does at times..everything but "The Wedding" pumps my nads..then again i'm hardcore so..and the song "Rainbow Children" just swings, baby;and rocks, and has a message..my two cents

thanx a lot for the responses. i wasn't aware there was another thread. i haven't been here in awhile. smile

it's funny b/c i have every prince album and a couple of the boots. i am very much a fan of prince's funk. don't mind the pop/rock joints he's put out. just down for the funk, is all.

big up all y'all that offered some perspective.

peace.
