OK, so Prince smokes a joint and asks you, "What exactly do you have against The Rainbow Children?"

He goes on to say that It's in the spirit of LoveSexy and that the album has some of his best musicianship on it.

Whether you're a fan of TRC or not, What exactly would you respond with?

I have absolutely nothing against The Rainbow Children; in fact, I think the album contains some of the most compelling music Prince has released in years. I feel far more connected to it than I ever was to Lovesexy.

Now if he asked me what exactly I had against Lovesexy, that would be a different discussion entirely...

I like TRC.

I think it's a deeply flawed Masterpiece (yes, Masterpiece).

For two reasons:

1) The narration. Narrating a concept album is taking the easy route. Just becuase the theme is confusing and wierd as hell , doesn't make it any less offensive to here narration--especially with Darth Vader at the helm.

2) It's hard to pay attention to a concept album that has too many momments that sound like elevator music, albeit good elevator music.

All-in-all, TRC is an underrated album. But to call it his best work would be overrating it too.

my only issue with TRC is purely asthetic and it's already been mentioned to death on this thread: the fat albert narration. i think it interrupts the flow of the album, and half the time i can't even tell what he's saying. if he were by some bizarre chance to re-release TRC without the narration, i'd probably listen to it ten times as much as i do now, which isn't very often at all (though i love the live versions on ONA and the Aladdin DVD).

Two thing I don't like about TRC;

1) The spooky electric voice...
2) The anti-sematic lyrics in some of the songs...

Futher it's a great album!

I'll give Prince a shot gun and then tell him I love TRC and all his music..

I still listen 2 TRC. Its a great

ALthough when I first listened to the album, it was in the shadow of SOTT so I din't care for it at first.

TRC started out interesting--much better than Rave, but after two or 3 listens the Darth Vader Narration became too much. It always spells doom when an album's first listen is its best.

the only thing i'd tell him is to stop fucking around with his mic effects...
i could do without the voice as EVERYONE else said - but if he truly insisted on narrating the album i would much rather hear his smooth soft voice instead of whatever the hell that was.

edit: and that whole thomas jefferson voice has GOT TO GO.
