What's taht stem behind him. It looks like it's coming from the heavens straight into his anus?

Anyways, LoveSexy is indeed the last of his great 80's works and one of the last of his artsy cutting edge albums. Since then he's had brilliant stuff released, but speckled with glaring imperfections.

I remember buying the cassette for the first time when it came out--let me tell you, standing at the counter asking to purchase the album with a naked womanly looking Prince, was not easy to do in the 80's in Birmingham Alabama.

Anyways, aside from the aweful rap that Kat performs in Alphabet Street, and the tendancy for the album to swap moods almost violently, it's a tight concise piece of work.

I didn't get it either when I first bought it, and couldn't understand why it was recieved so warmly by critics, especially in the wak of the brilliant SOTT, and equally interesting Black Album.

It was definately NOT the direction I was expecting him to go, but I should have known not to predict what he would do.

I recently listened to the album for the first time in 7 years this summer, and let me tell you--that shit was tight. I love the album now, and even love the songs I originally just couldn't dig (LoveSExy, When 2 R in Love, and Positivity).

Uptown #21 Winter 1995, Child Of The Sun-Exclusive Interview with Mayte. She is asked "I heard he is working on this "New World" album- kind of a techno album." "Oh, yeah!" said Mayte. Will this be released after the Gold Experince? "I dont know. He's always recording."
Goodnight, sweet Prince.

Thank you for having the balls to say what a lot of folks won't admit. I almost hate Lovesexy because of the constant praise it's given around these parts. I do disagree with you about Eye No and Dance On. But this album is so overproduced, full of the same religious babble (that folks 'round here love to shit on when it comes to the like of albums like TRC). It's a decent album but it's not great. This is definitely one of the last albums where Prince sounded like the so-called "Prince" but as an album it shouldn't have received the praise. Much like Musicology, it was solely the tour that made the album exciting. As an album, it's definitely not full of mind-blowing material but it became a different experience on stage.

Oh well, I agree with your rant. I'm sure somewill will retort with their "Lovesexy saved my life" story soon. rolleyes

Seriously. I was so embarrassed and traumatized when I bought it, that I ran out of the record store as quickly as I could.

Seconds later an armed robber walked into the store and shot up every muthaf@cka in that joint.

Exactly evillol

And PurpleKnight, it doesn't have anything to do with age, location (US or otherwise), color, creed or sexual preference. The album was lackluster in '88 as it is today compared to it's predecessors. Plain and simple. nod

No. But it would've allowed me to say it save my life, but not actually credit the merits of the album at the same time.

I have to partly agree with you. For me, Lovesexy is a pivotal album in the Prince cannon - it represents a line, before it - a clear progression, after it, an odd mixture of positives and negatives.

I think Prince locking himself up in Paisley Park is a big factor in the decline, and Lovesexy was the first Prince album recorded entirely at Paisley Park (If memory serves!)

I would say Lovesexy is an amazing album, but it is a bookmark on the end of Prince's best work, and thus has elements of that which came before, and that which would follow.

I think what I love about Lovesexy is the themeatics, the flow, the feeling of the album - And although I like what he did on the album - What I don't particularly like about it is that it doesn't sound like Prince was pushing himself anymore. Like he'd found a groove, a niche, and decided to settle there. There isn't really anything on Lovesexy we hadn't heard from Prince before (the Lovesexy sound was well underway with projects like Camille, The Black Album and the first two Madhouse records).

The Lovesexy sound is then made crisper, cleaner and more mechanical with the Rave/Batman. After this we see Prince chasing genres (House and Rap).

So, in answer to the question - Why is it so over-rated?

- Well, it's generally accepted to be the last great Prince record.
- It was Prince giving a big F.U. to everyone, doing what HE wanted to do - before doing so was deemed uncool by pop culture.
- It ends that chapter in Prince's career where he was a giant of pop music, the era when many people became fans, their childhood and adolesence.
- The tour - I'd say it was THE tour of his career, and it means a lot to the fans who attended.
- The self-made mythology that surrounds it's conception (The Black Album).
- It is a great record!

Acually, The Black Album was the first ever Prince album recorded entirely in Paisley Park Studio.

And here we go again with The Black Album vs. Lovesexy part 319 and counting! cool

It may have been compiled there, but the songs that were gathered for the album were not all recorded there. Without cracking open The Vault or DMSR, I know When 2 R In Love was, and Rock Hard probably wasn't - but the rest I'm unsure of.

Which is why I said the first Prince album fully recorded at PP was Lovesexy (without counting Madhouse 8 and 16 which probably were - again I'm presuming, without looking that up).

To me, "Lovesexy" is one of his typical average albums from 1985 to the present, it's "good" music but it's not "spectacular" music like the ealier albums. The album I have seen so far overrated around here is "Sign O The Times".

it's overrated? wow...thought that honor went to sott. it gets a lotta high praise but it ain't overrated 'round here...seems to me that most folks who dig the album are more attached to it cuz it came out at a tough point in their lives and it was their anchor--yes, the whole "lovesexy saved my life" thing.

i don't mind the album at all, but i understand its importance in the whole princely rigamarole. nod

Of course! Look around here, people absolutely love "Sign O The Times" and praise it to the highest form. You even started a thread yourself called "Purple Rain vs. Sign O The Times" so you, youself, realize what the majority of people like.

People love to accuse me of wanting a "Purple Rain Part II" (actually I'd prefer a "Dirty Mind" or "Controversy" Part II lol ) but I could accuse a lot of people around here of wanting a "Sign O The Times Part II". biggrin
