GIVE IT UP FOR "I could Never Take the Place..." GIVE IT THE F@CK UP for "I COULD NEVER TAKE THE PLACE OF UR MAN" from the SIgn of the Times Concert Movie.
GOT DAYUM, that shit is even better than the song is on the album. The stupid ass look Kat gives our boy on stage cracks my shit up, but the song is jammin. THIS IS BY FAR ONE OF HIS VERY VERY BEST POP SONGS. Also, do U think that the song title is in any way, shape, or form, a desperate plea for Prince to "out" his homosexual feelings? . I think I could never take the place of your man is the DEFINITIVE prince pop-rock song. he's made some good ones since then, but so many of them feel like ersatz recyclings of it.

You're absolutely right, the live version kicks ass!! I remember watching the SOTT-Movie at cinema together with only a handful of others, so we asked the technician to play it at full volume.....what a blast! Especially the guitar-solo on ICNTTPOYM..... @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

I think they could have done a better job, soundwise,on the guitar piece in the middle, but hey,it still kicks ass!!
'Though after hearing about the dubbing stuff on the SOTT movie (vocals, take a good look..)I'm looking with different eyes to it these days, and I feel a bit like I been had.Who's gonna prove to me now, that they didn't dub the whole thing?I thought for many years that the film was shot in Rotterdam,so I was glad I was there, but now I've read some different opinions on the whole project..To me the movie has lost his magic a bit,'cuz I can't stand the fact that P hasn't been completely honest with us on this one...If the sound wasn't good, why release it?Did he really have one opportunity to shoot this movie? Again:Take a good look at Hot Thing,It's gonna be a beautiful night e.g.They dubbed his voice, and now it looks like he's lipsynching!!!... A great song it is,indeed...

One of my favorite segments of this concert movie.
By the way, I watched the movie on cable one of the times they've shown it recently. And it looks like some of the footage is slightly different from the vhs tape that came out way back when. For instance the crowd shots are different, some of the camera angles of Prince dancing seem different. Also there's a portion during "Housequake" (I believe) where his voice looks badly out of sync with the lyrics of the song. I know a lot of this was re-created on the Paisley soundstage but on the vhs tape it didn't seem quite so obvious. Forgive me if this has been discussed before. Just point me to the thread and I'll read the comments there. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I'll play it first and tell you what it is later. -Miles Davis-

Yes, clearly Wally was the Buddha figure of the film. But what the hell, ICNTTPOYM rocks out...CD or live version, take your pick. Heh, I made a thread about the same thing a couple months back. The studio version is probably one of his most overrated songs, but the movie version is fucking hot.
Actually, as much as I love the album, I think pretty much all of the songs in the movie are better than their original counterparts. But ICNTTPOYM especially. ~ I'D BUY THAT FOR A DOLLAR ~

Even the brilliant "If I was Ur Girlfriend" Sounds better on the movie. Shit, I wish that thing would go to DVD and the album would be reissued as a remaster (sans Doug E Fresh and Larry G ofcourse)

I haven't seen the concert movie either though.
Damn though, I sure love this song. It's a classic. The mature awareness and acceptance of an impossible love in the lyrics, the anguished honesty in Prince's vocals, the effortless melody of the chorus, and a nice guitar solo to top it all off. It's brilliant. This song itself helps sum up what's great about SOTT as an album altogether. [Edited 12/25/04 21:09pm] The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

Yes I give it up for him totally. I just got this DVD for Christmas and his performance is amazing on all of it, especially this song. It is so easy to relate to the lyrics....
