Welcome to the Crystal ball project

Sorry4puttingthison2ice. I put it in the wrong place 1st time.

Good morning Ladies and Gentlemen.

Now I know these mix CD threads can get really dull, boring and repetitive after a while. However I decided about ten minutes ago to work on a project and I’d appreciate some help. If like me you love the Sign O’ the times album and other related works this should be right up your street.

I wish to create a complete CD set of every song Prince recorded from Dream Factory to when he stopped making all that Camille, Black album funk stuff and went to work on Lovesexy. I believe from what I read ‘Alphabet Street’ was the first song made for ‘Lovesexy’ (other than ‘When 2 R in love’ as it was made before the LS concept) so this set shall include up to whatever song was made and is in circulation before Alphabet street was made.

I want this set to start with the full Dream factory including it’s intro, then all those songs in their best possible sound quality, released and unreleased in chronological order. What I need is as much info as possible on all the tracks, versions of the tracks, dates and where to find them (What albums, etc). I have the book ‘Dance Music Sex Romance’ that should help a bit and I’m going to get ‘Turn it up 2’. I also have quite a few boots including ‘The Work 2’ (A god send) and I’m going to get the Dream factory 2CD (I think it’s a Thunder ball). But I would like as much data as you can possible give + any suggestions for this set (What to call it for a start). If you’re really interested maybe I could make a copy for you when it’s done.

If you have any other albums that are mainly made up of this 86/87 stuff I’d like to know what they are and what’s on them (If you can)

Right after I’ve done my bloody course work I’ll start on compiling my list. Just chuck any ideas down. Thanks.

And if U put your ear real close to the ground it also sounds like a lawsuit heading your way.

Don't get me wrong, I still think it's a great idea. There are many good quality boots out there, but somehow no one ever manages to just collect all the good soundquality ones for a single release.

Another thing is that various bootleggers compile albums like [just making one up here] "Camille" and then they put the only 7 of the 8 camille songs on there, and also throw in some trax from Diamonds & Pearls in unreleased version or shit like that.

AND FOR F*CK'S SAKE, IF YOU PUT SONGS BY CARMEN ELECTRA OR JILL JONES OR WHOMEVER ON A PRINCE BOOT, THAN AT LEAST MAKE IT CLEAR THAT THEY ARE NOT TRAX THAT FEATURE PRINCE ON VOX!

I don’t think I can get a lawsuit because I don’t intend on selling it. I might give a few away to friends but they all have the prince LPs that the released tracks are from anyway. ‘The funk bible’ is a great idea for a name. I believe that name was what Prince was originally going to call the black album, at least that’s what I read. I won’t commit to a name yet but if I don’t receive a better one I’ll defiantly call it that.

I agree that bootleggers don’t have much consideration for themes. Some albums I have include incorrect song names. I’m going to clearly describe each version and if someone else is performing it.

If I ever described this mix CD as a bootleg I’ve mislead you. As far as I’m concerned it’s the bootleg that should have been made by someone else and it will go on my bootleg shelf. But I’m not going to do anything illegal or anything that will result in Prince being short-changed. It’s strictly for my pleasure. When I’m done I’ll post the track list and what the source of each track was so if anyone really wants a good 86-87 collection they can make it them selves.

Please keep posting anything that will help me, even if it’s just a name or a suggestion.

Here’s an idea. Maybe you could suggest pictures to use for the front cover.

Ah, well if U don't plan on selling the set, than fcuz there's no worry about legal trouble smile -sorry my bad for not reading your post correctly.

Actually, I've made that set that you are planning to make for yourself a while ago.

It contains 70 trax spread over 5 discs, which I keep in my crystal ball hockey puck kinda thing.

But I haven't put them in order of when they were recorded or anything. Just all the songs that were recorded from the 2nd version of "4 The Tears In Ur Eyes" down to the start of the "lovesexy" recordings -which as you mentioned mark the start of a new musical era [at least in some ways].

I just hope that Prince will release this "witness 4 the prosecution" album that was mentioned last year, and if he does, I hope that it's another collection of outtakes such as Crystal Ball was. That way we might get some more songs to complete [at least a portion] of this kinda boxset with good soundquality songs.

As for artwork, I have no idea. But anything pictures shot during the sign o the times tour would b pretty cool 2 use.

PS: Don't forget to include "Splash". It's easily overlooked since it was released on the npgmc last year in the middle of a bunch of other material.

What a great idea, sexualfreak. You'll definitely be on your way once you get hold of the 'Dream Factory' 2CD and a copy of Days Of Wild 0.2.

A word of caution, though:

The 'Dream Factory' bootleg contains a shitty version of 'Big Tall Wall', which is missing a few seconds from the beginning, (but since you say you have 'The Work', volume 2 that should be OK, since Thunderball have done a little work on the track).

However, the sequence between 'Girl O' My Dreams ' and 'We Can Funk' on 'Dream Factory' is peppered by little pockmarks (loss of sound), which will require a little patience to rectify.

'The Work' is no help in this respect, since Thunderball have completely messed up the programming whilst dishonestly attempting to join 'Can't Stop This feeling I Got' with version # 3 of 'We Can Funk', making the whole thing sound like a homemade joke. Beware.

To complete your project you may also need to get version # 2 of 'Wonderful Ass', (10:02), which, apart from being much longer, features heavier drums and different instrumentation in places.

Bear in mind also that you will require 'The Ball/ Joy In Repetition' ("Crystal Ball sequence"), which are joined together in this particular version (the track runs for approximately 9:19 mins, and I believe you can find it on the 'Jewel Box' boot)

I also strongly recommend you locate version # 1 of 'Joy In Repetition' (#1), the one that begins with a lone, echoey drum, and which unfortunately has become difficult to find on CD. Last time I heard it it was on a Cd called 'New Jewels', if that's any help to you.

Peace.

Hmmm. I just made a set identical to this a few weeks ago. If I find the tracklist I jotted down, I'll share it.
