82-83 My brother, his best friend and I played b ball 2 or 3 times a week, and his best friend played Off the Wall and 1999 all the time. I liked the hits but the album-1999- just pulled me in. The PR solidified it in 84, took some time off in 86-87 after Parade, and when SOTT hit and then Lovesexy(my fave) came out... I just knew this was a musical journey I had to experience over and over again--and although I wish he played Paisley occaisionally...
The only thing he promises are new Prince albums, amazing Prince concerts...and surprises all along the way, I've never been let down once. peace "Great dancers are not great because of their technique, they are great because of their passion" -- Martha Graham

love your story by the way...brutally honest. I like that.Ok im 18 and all my life i've been exposed to spice girls and mutherfukin britney thinkin that was what music was. I never really started listening to music until grade 8. But my mom and dad play rolling stones and beatles alot so that's kinda what i grew up with. THroughout the 90s, prince got like no attention and i used to think he was just some gay guy from the 80s that disappeared afterwards. When i started collecting Madonna stuff like 5 years ago there was a song done with Prince on her "like a prayer" album So i asked my dad, "whose prince?" and he was like "some guy that writes filthy songs." and that was that. Then i seen him quite frequently on my favorite music video show "MuchMoreRetro" with his videos for 1999, Rasberry Beret, When Doves Cry, and so on. Then like many newbies to prince i seen his performance with beyonce at the grammys and loved him and wished beyonce would get the fuck off the stage so prince could do his thing without her. Then i bought all his albums, yes all of them and became broke but it was worth it The End "Great dancers are not great because of their technique, they are great because of their passion" -- Martha Graham

In 1983 when 1999 was aired it totally hit me. But at first it was only buying the single (remember the 45 vinyl?). Die hard fan wasn't until 1987 when I attended the concert at Galgenwaard Utrecht.

There's no concert I would have loved to have seen more than this one. I was in the seventh grade and I threw an absolute fit when no one would take me. Andy is a four letter word.

I was 15 years old, Oasis were the biggest band in Britain, Jim Mallon gave me Hits 2, Purple Rain and studio bootlegs of Days Of Wild & Shy and said "23, this guy is the greatest guy ever to walk the fucking Earth in a long time. But most people won't understand."
He trusted me. And I got it - instantly. Just a shame most people on this website don't, though. Damn, those quotes are on point. I swear that first quote by the person that introduced you to Prince sums up my personal feeling perfectly. It's good to see that you understood instantly. We both got into Prince around the same time. That magical year of 1995 introduced me to person whose art has inspired me immensely. But like you said most people on this site just don't get it and don't even get me started on the outside world. [Edited 1/6/05 18:17pm]

I am so glad that I had the opportunity to see that tour. I asked my mom if I had asked to go to that concert. She said no. Basically, her and her friend decided to take me and her friend's son to the concert. Of course, they were not expecting to see P prancing around in nothing but a trench coat, thigh highs, heels and bikini underwear. Plus, Rick had giant blunt prop at both ends of the stage and told everyone to 'fire it up.' Needless to say, I ended up being sprung on the skinnymuthaf@ckawiththehighvoice.

in 82' during high school. a friend always drew PRINCE all the time. so i pick up one of the albums and was hook then. and i always pick up tape/cd singles too. cause he would always release the instrumentals or new songs.
too bad my friend isnt here too enjoy PRINCE now. he died in a car crash 12/1986 racing down the street at nite. and the way i knew it was him, was he had all the PRINCE albums in the passager side seat where he was sitting in. so from 86 and present he miss out on some good years with PRINCE. R.I.P. so when ever PRINCE releases a new album i think of him. SOME PEOPLE--THOSE WHO THINK IT'S EVER THEIR PLACE TO CHANGE SOMEONE--WILL FIND NEW "FAULTS" WHEN OLD ONES GET "FIXED".
