I became a fan in 1984 when I saw When Doves Cry on MTV but I became a die-hard in 1991. I was a die-hard MJ fan between 84 and 91 but when Dangerous came out, my view of him changed. Plus at the time I had a problem with MJ being called the "king of pop" because I felt that that title should have went to Prince. Another reason was that Prince kept on releasing music every year so by 1990, I knew that I was going to be getting something new. Once Diamonds and Pearls came out, I was a die-hard for sure. I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

since 1978 - Soft and Wet - Cover of Right On magazine. Before, I thought "Soft and Wet" was sung by a woman...and then I saw him. Nothing has ever been the same. I was in the 8th grade.

What is it about being that age? That's how old I was when I began feeling all oogily about Prince.

1979 or 1980. A cousin was visiting and he was playing a tape. I was intrigued by the voice and the lyrics to the song. The song was Still Waiting. I could totally relate to that song. I went out and bought Prince and the first album on the same day. Life hasn't been the same since. Many concerts and a trip to Minneapolis gave me my hardcore status and here I am.

I offically bcame a fan in 1982 when my Mom tossed my cassette of '1999' out the window after hearing the lyrics 2 her 8-year-old Son's fave song "Let's Pretend We're Married" (She lightened up after I got older). I was a regular fan until 1993, when I officially went off the deep end and began "researching" songs from The Vault. I believe it was the summer of 1984. Up until that time I thought Prince was gay and looked like a woman. Things a typical immature teen would think. But a friend of mine who was a teenage drummer at the time turned me onto him. He had every Prince album on vinyl. One day we were sitting in his bonus room listening to records and he put on the PRINCE album. He started playing the drums as we were listening to I Wanna Be Your Lover. He started explaining to me that this cat was playing every single instrument and singing all vocals on his songs. As a teen of course it floored me and then a few weeks later he took me to see Purple Rain and the rest is history.

I discoverd the cat named Prince in 81, I heard "Lets Work", when 1999 came out I didnt think he could possibly make a better album, then Purple Rain, and every year you could always count on a new P album.

Ha! You sound like me. Well, except I was 11 or 12 and had heard the song on the radio and thought it was a group. Then I found out it was one guy. Then I saw his picture in the Right On! centerfold and almost fainted. [Edited 12/23/04 13:51pm] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

My cousin showed me his picture and I couldn't believe it. Little did I know that I would still be digging this guy still in my 30's.

Ah...1995. Beautiful, indian summer. Bootleg of The Gold Experience. I was 15 years old, Oasis were the biggest band in Britain, Jim Mallon gave me Hits 2, Purple Rain and studio bootlegs of Days Of Wild & Shy and said "23, this guy is the greatest guy ever to walk the fucking Earth in a long time. But most people won't understand."
He trusted me. And I got it - instantly. Just a shame most people on this website don't, though.
