Prince's real rival So who is Prince's real rival. Not Micheal Jackson for obvious reasons. D'Angelo, Maxwell, Musiq, Andre 3000, etc are good but they're just clones.
The only real rivals I can think of both have flaws. First, Beck. Original, funky, comes from right field, catchy BUT too industrial and harsh sounding sometimes, kinda jarring. I like him though. Never know what to expect. The one I was concerned about back in 1987 was Terrence Trent D'Arby (Sananda Maitreya). Oh my god that guy is good! I'd even argue he's a better singer and at least as good a songwriter. His downfall - he can't play guitar, at least not like Prince. Let the rain come down

Prince's rival for years was Rick James. No one else could ever touch Prince and probably never will. Andy is a four letter word.

Who else on the scene plays as many instruments as him, writes their own songs, and entertains the way he does?

He's got a helluvah history to top. Not that he has to, or wants to - but his back-catalogue (for me) is his biggest rival.

I wonder if she can do the splits like him. U know--bounce off the floor and back up again wiggling her ass while she does it. Come to think of it, I wonder if she has any buttless yellow jump suits.

Beck and Terence Trent D'Arby are his real rivals. David Bowie in a way as well.
I wouldn't call any of the above names "Prince clones" though. That just isn't true.

Beck & Terence are obviously influenced by Prince, but who isn't?
They are both very talented and different from Prince. I'd like to see Prince do Sea Change. Prince has no real rivals, but folks like Beck, D'Angelo, Andre 3000, Justin Timberlake and a whole slew of horrible entertainers are stealing his spotlight. Check this song out at:

well, it could be argued that prince DID do his version of "sea change"...one nite alone (the piano album) has much the same mood, only with prince's sensibilities.

why does an artist HAVE to have a rival? from what i've seen Prince isn't quite like anyone else.
what he has over artists like MJ and Madonna is 99% of his work is his own. No 'hot' producers for Prince, he never felt the need to keep up with trends, he should be very proud of himself for always doing his own thing. I might expand on this in a new thread, when i'm not nevermind, http://www.prince.org/msg/7/126200 [Edited 12/16/04 13:17pm]

David Bowie! Both P and Bowie are greats, I would not say one is better than the other. I love the Prince and Bowie stories to date and I can find some simularities in the music, the highs the lows, the years were much like some of the 80s traps Bowie got caught up in. Bowie got caught up in commercial music(FAME!) for a time then dumped that like when Prince recorded TRC. Listen to songs from Bowie like "Beauty and the Beast" and you'll hear hints of what would be. The last few years from Prince and Bowie were awesome!

Bowie is one of Prince's Influences. The Glam Rock androgyny. Young Americans (1975) is Bowie's Soul album. Its funky (Fame)! The changes of looks from Ziggy Stardust (1972), Aladdin Sane (1973), The Thin White Duke (1975-77). Goodnight, sweet Prince.

Every artist should have a rival though. I loved it when Rick James and Prince were rivals. Rick kept him on his toes and at his hardest BEST. There wasn't any jazz and classical in Prince's music then, Prince didn't have a pop audience to back him up so Rick would have spit him out! [Edited 12/16/04 18:09pm] I'm sorry but anyone who is that vitriolic about TTD hasn't listened to his music. In every respect except for sheer prolificness, TTD is prince's equal or superior. On the subject of rivals, I don't think Prince has any, at least not of his generation, for awhile it would've been Rick James but slick r.i.p. fucked up his life and his music hard. The only artists who I think have made bodies of work as good or better than Princes are all Prince's predecessors: The Beatles, Zappa, Bowie, James Brown, Sly, P-Funk, Jimi, Stevie, Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, Curtis Mayfield.
