im sorry but Prince absolutley topped jimi hendrix on bambi from 2002 celebration

version of bambi,
prince did contains on of the best guitar solos ever played.
prince was probably very inspired .
to play guitar after seeing peformance of guitar player bernard (i can't remember his last name right now, anyway great player)
he totaly nailed it on the bambi.
his playing was so raw ,passionate ,his whammy bar work sounded"evil".
im not saying he is better then jimi but with that "bambi" he totaly blow him away.

Me too. Prince took it up a notch that night.
If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

Anxiety

hendrix laid down the blueprint for this kind of style and energy - i'd have to wonder if this particular performance by prince would have been possible had hendrix never existed.

Please ... stop this ...

Prince is no guitar-god like Jimi
Prince ain’t that funky like James, George or Sly
Prince can’t compose real pop-classics like the Beatles

Prince stole a little bit of them all, and made a brilliant new style of it ....
But on those specific qualities he can’t match the pioneers

You make it sound like it's Thanksgiving or something.

(That pun made really no sense. I'm gonna post it anyway.)

true, but thats cuz Prince never spent 8-9 hours a day playing guitar. lets say prince is a 8.5/10 on guitar and jimi is a 10/10 but take in2 account Prince doesnt spend most of his time playing guitar. The man does so much shit theres no way hes gonna top all ranks...but im sure he could.

true, but thats cuz Prince likes 2 play other styles. it would be stupid 2 try doing what others have done first.

just imagine how huge he would have been on guitar if he just concentrated on that instrument...or in anything the man does.

think about that.

I doubt that I would be interested in Prince if he purely focussed on the guitar ...
His funky jams are great but his solo’s ain’t that interesting (they’re pretty slick).

During the Dirty Mind / Controversy era his guitar work was promising (jammin’ with Dez and Brown Mark was close to brilliance) ... but after that he decided to focus on the synth (1999 era).
Since Purple Rain he’s the popstar ... not the guitar-god.

After that it seemed he never wanted to be a guitar-god ... untill 2002, since than he wants to prove himself as a great guitar-player ... to bad nobody is interested anymore?

Good you pointed out that. That's exactly when he had the most potential to become really original at the guitar in my opinion (I would still count in the 1999 album as well), but he chose to go for the more rock-star theatrical style of playing instead. I think he reached his sound-FX explosiveness apex during the LoveSexy-tour. But earlier, especially on cuts like "Uptown" he can be heard doing something really inventive - altough it is quite straightforward and sparse indeed.

Just off the topic slightly, how cool would it be to see Prince return to form with an unbelievable guitar orientated album in 2005. I mean something really out there, rock edged...

Hmm..

Rowdy

Celly + Prince + PopLife + Broken Vocal Delay effect = hilarity

PS - the Undertaker Bambi is the ultimate version. It jumps up and down on all others cool

PPS - but that's mainly because of the drumming cool cool

Didn´t Prince himself say that you can´t really compare people and that he is more influenced by Santana and his clean playing ? ( Rolling Stone interview 1985) ?
I was at the Celebration that night and it was one my my favorite Prince moments ...especially when he played Something In the Water and that slowed down version of I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man ..

He took what Sly and James did and expanded a 1000 times. Dude is one of the GOATS and it appears that most of the public is very to realize this.

1,000 times? you really think 1,000 times? smile

i'd say he was able to get sly and james' styles down, but he ain't expanded on shit. he is still one of the greatest of all time though--simply because he was probably the first to meld all those people's styles together if anything.

songwriting wise, he is a MASTER.

as for the musician aspect, i just can't help but think that he's a jack of all trades and a master of none--he shows so much promise, but doesn't...um, take it to that "other level" enough, y'know?

$.02.

Why do we constantly have to keep comparing musician against a musician, especially one that's an icon and dead. Apples and oranges. Two musicians from two different eras. Why the need? Just appreciate these two musicians for who they are and what they have contributed to music today. It's a waste of energy to compare.

Prince is playing guitar incredibly well these last years. Better than every.

About to be a guitar-god...

Well, most of them are not very good players, but people talk about them a lot. Its not a question of their skills.
People less known as Petrucci or Metheny are thousand better than Hendrix and similar guitarists.

So i dont think that we need that people think Prince is a guitar-god. What Prince has to do, and he is doing, and very well, is playing guitar. And playing guitar really well.
We dont need to compare, just to enjoy.

And Prince is really on the top, nowadays. Same than 2 or 3 or 4 hundred guitarists more.

Actually thank God Prince isn't a guitar god. I wouldn't find much use for his music personally if that was the case.
