Prince - the lost songs

Before anyone screams 'Wrong forum!' (that is SO gonna happen now rolleyes smile ), please read on...

Orgers, I had a revelation last night.

I don't know how many years I've had Sheila E's third, self-titled, album but - for some reason - I've never really got into it. I love 'The Glamorous Life' and 'Romance 1600' but I've always viewed 'Sheila E' as the 'Ugly Sister' of the three - whether that's because (officially) it has the least Prince input or not, I don't know...

Anyway, last night I gave it another shot and eek

WOW!

I think it might be my favourite!

I've always loved 'Koo Koo', 'Boys Club' and 'Love On A Blue Train' but never gave 'One Day (I'm Gonna Make You Mine)' or 'Pride And The Passion' much chance. I think it's that twee, cutesy opening that made me skip 'Pride...' before. Last night, however - music Oh my God, I LOVE it! And that latino/funk breakdown at the end - why oh why hasn't Prince written a whole song in this vein? (Maybe somebody can think of an example of a 'latino' song - sorry, I can't think of another term to describe it - he's previously released which I can't remember. There are plenty of songs which have that lil' conga thing going on or turn into a 'Latino' breakdown - 'The Everlasting Now' anyone? - but I cannot think of one single track which is particularly written that way. Prince + horns + congas = drool And that rhythym guitar - so c l e a n. In some ways, it reminds of an early version of 'Lovesexy', which ain't no bad thing. wink ) I'd KILL to hear Prince's vocal version of this.

Anyway, this set me thinking... which Prince-written song - that he gave to another artist - would you most like to hear, by him?

Today, I'm going to say 'Boys Club'. Feel that beat. It's hypnotic, it's pulsating, it makes me want to dancing jig. God knows how funky the demo was.

Forget about Sheila E as a Prince protegé and check on her back in th 70's when she was playing for George Duke and above all, the two albums she did with her dad.

I always used to think that it would be a great idea for a boxset
for Prince to release an "alternate" hits package including a lot
of those songs he wrote for other people. Like songs for

Sheila E
The Time
Martika
Bangles

etc etc. A lot of those songs he wrote for others were big/huge
hits for those acts. It would be a "greatest hits" package with
a nice twist.
