Parade Prince Why does the Parade-era Prince bother me so much? Well in a way and I do not mean to sound steryotypical in any way but the Parade era Prince is the closest he has ever been to a white guy. He remindes me of a white guy in how he dresses, looks and acts and mabey because he was with Susannah during that time too but he just seemed like he was more like himself during other eras (well except the Come era-he kinda reminded me of an alien then). I just really didn't think he was too sexy during Parade. I mean white guys are hot I'm not saying that but it just seems like Prince was not being himself during that era.

I'm not sure. He probably didn't seem like himself because he was trying to portray the Christopher Tracy persona in promotion for the movie, album/soundtrack and accompanying tour?

I would have said the opposite, that Parade era Prince was more 'black' than
the 'white' Prince of Purple Rain and Around The World In A Day. The Parade shows were a lot funkier than the more rock orientated previous tour, and had a more old 'soul revue' feel to them. Prince himself seemed to have lightened up from his moody introspective Purple Rain persona and was having fun and smiling more. And even the character of Christopher Tracy, despite inhabiting a very wealthy white world in Nice, seemed much 'blacker' than The Kid.

...one of the happiest times im my life was cutting out of school and buying that record and running over to my friends house to listen.....that album and almost the whole year was pure magic...too bad the movie was such a turkey but the whole thing was well intentioned.....
....i remember the Wendy and Lisa rolling stove cover and it seemed that they were really hitting a peak there....wierd how it all turned out after that....the chaos that was SOTT, then the angry Black Album , then the fey lovesexy....and then it all really went to hell... The cool thing about Prince in those days was he didnt care if you thought he was "too white".....somewhere after 1990 it seemed he became obsessed with not so much his racial identity but what others perceived of it...

"Parade" has got to be the "whitest" album Prince did in the 1980s. Sure, it had a few funk tracks on it but they were not the type of tracks that black radio knew Prince for. I remember black club DJs saying "Boy, Prince has really lost it this time!". Prince sang folk on "Sometimes It Snows In April", "Venus De Milo" was classical, you could hear an orchesta playing on "Anotherloverholenyohead", and what could be more "whiter" than "Do U Lie"? Hell, it sounds like something Lawrence Welk would make. [Edited 12/19/04 22:51pm] Andy is a four letter word.

Loved the album and tour, and apart from now he has never seemed happier, more relaxed or as cool in a nice simple way. And the look was great. I've never fancied the man but if I had choose an image to bang it would definitely be that one.

It amazes me that anyone is able to not find the Parade - era sexy "Can't keep my eyes from the circling skies -

If anything, I remember seeing UTCM in the theatre and thinking how it seemed like he was actually "acting more Black" (to use this thread's terminology) than ever, almost doing it on purpose (like the whole "why don't y 'all get a job" scene). In fact a big part of the plot was Christohper being so different from Mary, teaching her about "wreca stow's etc.". The tour as mentioned above, was much more of a soul revue style. The musical styles of the album, however, are clearly more complex and contain many more influences than previous albums which were more funk and rock. He mixes jazz, classical, folk (although I never thought of it that way until someone above said it) touches in with the funk and soul and created something no one ever did before (or really has since IMO). BTW "Do U Lie" is a French style of music. I dont know what it's called but it's very recognizable and fit the movie since it took place in France. Oh, and I don't know how many "white" guys run around in metallic suits with finger wave perms, although back then I probably would've if I could've [Edited 12/20/04 8:26am]

That makes perfect sense to me! I know I've heard that style and I associate it with France but I just dont' know where or when I've heard it. Now that I'm thinking of it, there's a little musical inro on W&L's 2nd album, Fruit at The Bottom.... I think it's just before the song "Satisfaction" with Jesse Johnson, that has a similar kinda sound.... maybe it's the accordion or something?

To digress from the main thread (as I so love to)-
Music isn't 'black' or white'. Music has no race or colour. Surely that's one of the things Prince has always been about. He follows in the footsteps of Duke Ellington, Sly Stone and Stevie Wonder and many others in that just because an artist is one colour or race, why should he/she be 'ghetto-ised' into doing only the music associated with their race. A black American composer by the name of James Reece Europe (1880-1919) wrote for dance bands and classical-style orchestras before 1920 (before he was stabbed to death by his crazed drummer). The Afro-British composer Samuel Coleridge Taylor (1875-1912) wrote classical works using African-inspired melodies. I quote - 'What Brahms has done for the Hungarian folk music, Dvorak for the Bohemian, and Grieg for the Norwegian, I have tried to do for these Negro Melodies.' Prince belongs broadly in this tradition, and as such, Prince's colour isn't black, white or green - it's music. And the music on 'Parade' is damn good music.

Oh Prince is acting "white" during the Parade era????? That's right black people only act, talk, and dress a certain way.Mostly like the hip hop stereo types that you see on TV. Don't tell Spike Lee, Bill Cosby, or Denzel. White people act, talk, and dress entirely differently. Don't tell Eminem or Elvis. This is not a sweeping generalization, nor racism, nor bigotry. It has been scientifically proven. And music? Ohhhh no. Black folks and white folks always always always make different music. No exceptions.
Honestly, does anyone of any color dress how Prince dressed in "Under the Cherry Moon"? Weren't Tricky and Christopher smooth talkin', street hustlin', BLACK, gigalos? If you honestly believe that people of different races act a different ways exclusively based on their color then you have a lot more troubles than what Prince is up to. How people act and behave has a lot more to do with the socio economic status than their color. "New Power slide...."

fuc all the serious black-and-white talk. Personally, one of his best looks (the fingerwaves at the party w/the skintight suit) came out of UTCM...
People are people period, especially if they look like Prance. How bout that hat he was wearing in the film, and in the mountains vid? I hate that hat... Yes-- I hate that black hat he's wearing, i dont care if it was inspired by France... I would love to ask him what the hell he was thinking wearing it..... Then I'd ask him if i could wear it and only it while he wrote songs about it on my futon.
