I always used to hate it, but have really started feeling it lately...

I guess I'm just a sucker for a catchy chord sequence.

So what's the verdict on this one?

On a completely seperate note, isn't We Gets Up up there with Life O The Party and Jughead in being the most offensive Prince recording to date?

its catchy.

It's one of the "groovier" tunes on Emancipation.

I love it, but it would be way better if it had more of a live sound. Too much percussion programming on that whole album. Alot of the songs sound like the preprogrammed tracks that are on electric organs on display in the mall.

Definitely in my bottom 10 list. Unfunky and cheesey and borderline embarrassing, lyrically and musically. I remember he played it during that TV special, and I was dreading the album immediately (though there were obviously much better songs on it)

And I like We Gets Up, so maybe I'm insane.

Not becuase it's a better song, but becuse the title Jam of the Year sounded like it would rival any fierce track off of the Gold Experience, when it just ended up sounding like standard issue Prince dance floor filler.

So by teh time Get Ur Groove on came around, I'd already been so dissapointed, I couldn't possibly hate this song any worse.

Emancipation, though imperfect, falls under the catagory of classic Prince albums to me, becuase it followed the 3 step Prince formula:

1) Extreme anticipation
2) After finally hearing it, scratching my head?? The listening to it again just to make sure I wasn't carzy.
3) After multiple listens it grew on me to to point I actually liked it.


Prince's other "non classic" albums go through this route

1) Extremem anticipation (or fear)
2) After finally listening to it, either digging it for it's pop value or just not getting it
3) Listening to it several more times with lessoning interest on each rotation

Still, I like his little ol' Farmer Bob-type character, who makes an appearance at the end.

I like we gets up (sly stone - daddy popish vibe)...get your groove on is passable but the real gem in Emanicpation was always "Sex in the summer".....i know everyone says it but there really was one amazing album in there somewhere....

It's a nice track.

The whole of Disc 1 of Emancipation would've been a great pop CD - just replace Mr. Crappy with another track.

It's more important track in his musical history than you might think at first. In the first half of the 90s Prince seemed to eschew his old "light funk"-sound: all of his faster songs were pretty dark and had somewhat of an unnecessary lyrical attitude to them. "Get Yo Groove On" was the first song in a very long time that he started revisiting again his "true-self" once more. I mean "It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night" it is definitely not, but it was some sort of a musical resurrection for sure.

I liked it on the Emancipation Celebration concert then was HUGELY disappointed by the album version, pure cheese.
