Prince, Jam & Lewis mentions in City Pages' [Mpls] "The Year In Music 2004" i grabbed my usual copy of shitty pages (i like to call city pages that, heh) this morning and read through their year-end music flashback report. they have this listed in their look back at this past february:
Kicking ass with Beyoncé at the Grammy Awards, Prince initiates a year of relevance. Subsequent kicking of ass is reported from his Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony, several sold-out shows at the Xcel Energy Center, and reunions with old friends back at Paisley Park. Speaking of old friends, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis close their local Flyte Tyme Studios this year, making "the Minneapolis sound" the byword of a lost vocabulary.
...pretty sweet (and a titch misleading/misguided, what with paisley park still in operation here, regardless of flyte tyme's buh-bye). if you wanna read the rest of what went down here in the twin cities music-wise, the rest of the article can be seen here. props to peter scholtes, it's a pretty nice look back on the year that was.

It's not terribly off the mark, what with Toronto looking more and more like his home base. And anyway, it's been a decade since either Prince or Jam/Lewis crafted a jam that in any manner resembling 'the Minneapolis Sound.'

Have you heard the end of "The Everlasting Now"? "1+1+1=3"? The end of "Musicology"? Pure MPLS sound. "New Power slide...."

the mpls sound ain't just limited to prince & co., y'know. You got that right, it spread to a lot of people, I took alot for my songwriting and I'm from Seattle.

As I read it, it looks like J&L are giving up the recording-biz a little bit to concentrate on other projects. IMHO they were great producers (but many times they over-produced many songs) but they were never that captivating as composers. As we all know the first Time-albums were mainly written by P and the songs J&L recorded with stars like Janet Jackson, Alexander O'Neal, and (for goodness sake) Pia Zadora didn't really stay in our memories(certainly not mine).
P continuous with writing and composing and Paisley Park is still there. P allready said it many times: "There ain't such a thing as a real MPLS-sound, it's a combination of many influences" and, indeed, there's also another scene at MPLS which has nothing to do with P.

the mpls sound ain't just limited to prince & co., y'know. Well, yeah, it was. Why else would they have given it a name? And if none of the principal architects of this sound consider Minneapolis their home, and if that sound isn't the all-encompassing influence today the way it was back in the day, then it really is the 'byword of a lost vocabulary.'

I sent a press kit to jam and terry, out of all the people I sent one to, their a and r was the only one to respond in any way, they rejected it. I was hoping they would hear the crazy indian version of the minneapolis sound. With all due respect to Prince, I do think the minneapolis sound is funky bass, keyboards taking horn parts, and the linn drum machine. That's oversimplified but that's what it is to me. You can hear the sound in the many copycats in the eighties, even Bruce Springsteen was prodded by his producer to give him a "prince thing" because that was the cutting edge at the time, Bruce came up with Dancing in The Dark, one of his worst tunes ever but a hit nonetheless.

I think everyone refers to it as the Shitty Pages, because...well, it is just that: shitty. A good friend of mine writes for them, and I enjoy her articles a lot, but on the whole their writers are obsessed with being witty rather than informative and thorough. It annoys the piss outta me.
