Not only are you nuts for trying to "put together a promo of Prince's music" for your 5-year-old niece smile you should be jailed for making a child listen to "Make U'R Mama Happy" and "7". biggrin

C'mon. Just go to the record store and buy her an album of proper children's songs for Christmas instead. Let kids be kids.

I made a similar compilation for my child when she was about five. I was digging Prince at five so there's absolutely no harm in it. I'm sorry Disney's "It's A Small World After All" just didn't do it for me. It's better that you open her up to good music before the current pop culture takes over and Raven Simone starts taking her clothes off.... Oops that already happened.

My kids love Prince; they're 7 and 4. I made them a tape of their favorite songs, including Take Me With U, Starfish and Coffee, Housequake and Eye No. They made the list, I made the tape.

They're such cool kids. cool

Agreed unless she SPECIFICALLY asked for a Prince mix.

I agree with Novabreaker:

Well then obviously you don't have to pick out a Christman album but kids like kids music.

Out of curiosity lovemachine and Novabreaker, how old were you when you became Prince fans? And who or what exposed you to him?

falloff

I think what they're saying, though, is there's a difference between her asking for it, and you maybe "pushing" Prince on her. Personally, I don't see anything wrong with making her a tape of appropriate songs you think she'd like.

I was... hmmm... I'd say 13. Just hearing the music and being curious for more. That and the "Cream" video with all the women in lingerie. My puberty was just about to commence. giggle

There is nothing wrong with making the tape but I would hope that he would also buy her some traditional kids music and let her choose. MOST kids are not going to want to listen to Prince.

The Graffiti Bridge features special appearances from The Sesame Street gang, the Muppets and Lambchops. With a special offer, you get a free NPG Big Bird for the price of one.

(aka Graffiti Bridge is quite kid-friendly).

thumbs up!

I think you really should have kids or kids around you to be answering this thread. My kid is exposed to my music because that's what I listen to. I was introduced to Prince by my brother in 1979 and I'm sure glad he introduced Prince into my life. It's not like zoeprizer is forcing anything on her neice, she's just sharing a part of her life. I did that with my neices and nephews and we've had a ton of awesome memories because of it! So in my house you'll hear Dora the Explorer and then some Prince or Wendy and Lisa music at any given moment. My kid loves "A Place in Heaven" the version that Lisa sings as well as Musicology.

My kids heard Prince all their life.
Problem is now Prince is adult music and they head for other stuff.
I like the Hendrix, but you can only hear so much acdc

I don't understand why people are having a fit over this. Everyone has a right to their opinion and here's mine. I don't think there is anything wrong with sharing some music from your favorite artist. All you're saying is "Here, check this out, I hope you like it." The songs you chose are great songs and have fun dancey rhythms to them. I was listening to JAMES BROWN and THE OHIO PLAYERS at age 5. Dancing my butt off. ENCOURAGE MUSIC for children. If you would like these songs in one continuous mix, let me know. I'll do it for you. I they don't mix well together, I'll think of some way to make 'em fit.

Merry X-mas.

I think it's nice that you want to share your favorite artist with your neice. Unless she's objected to hearing a Prince song before, I don't think you're forcing her to do anything. I like your list and I think you should add "Diamonds and Pearls" and "The Most Beautiful Girl In the World" to it. Even though many Orgers dislike these two songs, from previous posts I've read, they are kid-friendly and clean with positive messages.

Did they like the videos to the songs? I remember the first time I saw the "Diamonds and Pearls" video. I was overly-excited when the dancer was being spun by her partner and I was like 16....sad, I know, but it brought out the "OHHHH" factor in me. biggrin Now, I watch it and think it's kinda cheesy, but I still think the dancers are smooth as silk.

I was five when I started listening to Prince music (1984). I really liked When Doves Cry. I don't think you have to use some of the more (don't kill me) dumbed down songs like Most Beautiful Girl and Make Your Mama Happy. Kids know and appreciate good music.

She's five; she won't understand any inuendo. Don't limit yourself. I reccomend upbeat songs that she could dance around to. Just be sure to respect the parents' wishes about swearing and sex (if they limit her music intake).

Other good ones...Starfish and Coffee, 1999, Play in the Sunshine, Housequake...lots.

Have fun!
