I think the album stinks overall. Pop Life is the only song that I have come to love from that record...

I love this album! It's the album that got me hooked on Prince for life.

great album in terms of prince asserting his place as a guy that wont follow the rules. it endeared him to the hardcore who resented the PR mainstream acceptance. I loved PR but it was grueling watching kids who dismissed him as a pervert a year earlier jump on the bandwagon. ATWIAD was that first "what the fuck?" moment for the mainstream fake ass's and it became the soundtrack of that summer for me and my crew of rejects.

No worries. Besides it's possible Pop Life has BG vocals like that too but I know G&B does for sure. I wonder if I have that version of ATWID. I have an outtake somewhere on my ipod, the sound quality isn't that great. I htink it has more of the middle eastern instruments that David Coleman was using. I like the live version that opened the Parade tour.....esp the synth horns... "I Think Wanna Dance! Unh!" I think that the one on your IPOD is the one I have. I really love it. I missed the Parade tour. I'm in the San Francisco Bay area and I was around 19 years old when he announced that he would be playing at the Warfield Theater. I was pissed because, of course, tix went fast. I do have his Birthday concert on video though. I think I have the incomplete one, all though it seems complete. I just heard that there's a longer one. Miguel MyeternalgrattitudetoPhil&Val.Herman said "We want sweaty truckers at the truck stop! No. Signs and Batman are the masterpieces post rain. People usually argue over love sexy as a masterpiece.

I think in its own way it is. I went in not expecting much from it and it wound up being one of my favorites! If you think about it, it's really a soul/funk take on the Beatles. It's almost an album they would have released had they been more....well, FUNKY! And in my mind it's easily better than SOTT and 1999. 1999 needed some more editing done and Sign was good but it definitely could have been edited down to one disc without losing much. And what's more, the title track is probably one of the few examples SINCE the Beatles of world music being used in a more mainstream context. [Edited 12/16/04 10:08am]

I was 19 or 20 too when this tour came around. I didnt' realize how lucky I was. I think it was Summer of '86 ( so I would've been 19) and I was home from school in NJ. I didn't realize it was just a Hit'n Run at the time (was that known at the time?) but I got tickets with my brother and best friend and we saw one of the shows at Madison Square Garden. It was awesome, except he ended it without an encore, and I refused to leave cuz I was CONVINCED he'd come back and do one (I had seen PR tour twice and he did an extra encore after the lights went up the 2nd time, the debut of "America") so the security guards had to force me to leave! I have a CD-ROM with Birthday Parade. I dont know if it's the whole show or not either.

It's a good album, but it's not a masterpiece.
For a start it's deliberately sequenced awkwardly, and there are a few indulgences on the album that prevent it from deserving (or wanting) that title.

We'll compare and see if we have the same concert. Cool? Miguel MyeternalgrattitudetoPhil&Val.Herman said "We want sweaty truckers at the truck stop! Calling it a masterpiece is going to far, as most of you have already pointed out. I was a teenager when it came out and I absolutely loved it. I especially like the title track. I has this otherworldly vibe and a driving beat. Come here, babe.. yeah...

This was the first album i bought by Prince. I thought Pop Life was the best song ever back then. I respected Prince for putting out an album so different than PR. Not too many artist have the guts to do something like that. I think it is a masterpiece amongst Prince albums but not necessarily amongst other albums.

Masterpiece? NOOOOO! I like Paisley Park, Temptation and America. The B-Sides Shes Always In My Hair, Hello and Girl are more powerful then anything on the album. Roadhouse Garden, Our Destiny, All Day, All Night ,Possessed and The Dance Electric should have been on it. Goodnight, sweet Prince.

"No. Signs and Batman are the masterpieces post rain. People usually argue over love sexy as a masterpiece."
Cool. I never hear anyone mention the Batman album and i think it's the last great Prince album (up to this point i would have him above a par with Bowie and Lou Reed). Electric Chair (i'm guilty oh yeah....AAAHM GUILTAYYYYY), Vicki Waiting (sublime guitar playing), and Scandalous are among my favourite Prince songs. Anyone seen the BBC2 documentary from around that time? The bit when he's playing the bass on Partyman...!!!! I find it weird people saying they don't like Condition Of The Heart. As much as i bug my friends with Prince they always give me that song as a classic. I love ATWIAD. I dunno if it's a masterpiece but it's a good album to shut all those people up who lump him in with Michael Jackson, Madonna, etc. Absolutely no one else could have done that album. More artistic anyway. It was more of a statement than Sign was. Sign was good but again, could have been whittled down to a single disc. I dont think anyone has ever made an album like ATWIAD and hasn't since.

Some of you have heard me say this before, but Around the World In A Day, along with Lovesexy, The Gold Experience and The Rainbow Chilren, are my four favorite Prince albums. ATWIAD was given to me as a gift in late 85.
ATWIAD was this big monster to me, because it sounded so much like a psychadelic version of Purple Rain, even though he was clearly avoiding a take 2 of PR. I had also heard She's Always In My Hair on the radio, and was lovin' that cut.
