Should Prince cover...?

What song should Prince cover? Let's not state the obvious: James Brown, George Clinton, Sly Stone, Stevie Wonder. Go for more off the wall ideas.

My suggestion is "The Stranger" by Billy Joel. Jazzy intro and outro. Great lead guitar line and I'd like to hear Prince's vocal take.

I honestly can't think of Prince covering anyone elses songs. I just see other artists covering what he has done. He's just too original for that.

But for the sake of this topic, I think he should cover the song Frontin' by Pharrell of the Neptunes because I know that Prince can sing a better falsetto and that he would do a great job with the instrumentation.

Billy Joel is a good one... I always think about a funk version of "Tell her about it", because I love the lyrics and hate the instrumental.
I even tried to do it myself, but my means are just too limited sigh

Prince has done a number of covers. And and much as I love the guy I don't really care for a lot of them. The worst one of all is "Everyday is a Winding Road" by Sheryl Crow.

As I've mentioned before, I would like to hear Prince make an album of jazz standard tunes, with a group of real jazz musicians (not the NPG!). And he shouldn't play any instruments himself, only sing.

That I'd like to hear!

I read somewhere Prince is a Cocteau Twins fan (Cocteaus' and The Sundays were playing over the PA when i saw him on the Nude tour).
I'd like to hear him do Everybody Here Wants You by Jeff Buckley. That sounds like a Prince song.
Pictures Of You would be a good one, although i can't imagine anyone but The Cure doing it. Same for Julian Cope-although i bet he could do a great version of China Doll.

How about Love Will Tear Us Apart, Joy Division.....including the dancing!!!

How about if Prince just stands at the back, watching? He's a multi-talented guy you know? wink

"So if you don't mind, I would like to...watch" cool

No, but seriously, I think Prince would be an excellent (and totally unique) jazz singer, but it would have to be in the right musical environment, which I don't think the NPG could provide (or Prince himself for that matter, as an instrumentalist).

If there's any jazz musicians out there, you know what I'm talking about...

NO WAY. I gotta check it out. I love the original. I think that song is the funkiest of all songs. One Nation Under A Groove is the second.
