I still enjoy listening to this cd as I find it spiritual in many ways and I just can't deny his amazing music ability and his stunning voice throughout.
the stand-out tracks for me are the title song, 1+1+1=3, muse 2 the pharoah, family name, mellow and...ugh...the one that sounds especially gospel-y and not especially very prince-y...i forget what it's called - everywhere? - that one threw me for a loop, and in a very pleasant way. i love the live version of everlasting now on ONA live...the studio version is pleasant enough, but lacks the kick of the live performance. musically, i think it's a really strong album and i can even overlook the so-called "anti-semitism" and "anti-female" sentiments people seem to think are in the lyrics...i can see the arguments, but they're arguable at best...it's just that damn narration that i can't get past. if he released a version of TRC without that narration, i'd probably listen to it ten times more than i do now. hell, i'd probably listen to it, period! I agree with you Anxiety. There are some very funky songs on this cd. Unlike Rave which I think is mostly pop crap. I don't hate Rave, but IMO the best song on that cd is Pretty Man, whereas TRC has many great songs if you can get past the narration.

i think a lot of TRC was written and recorded with live performance in mind. so many of the songs just came to life for me when i heard them on the ONA tour.

I couldn't disagree with you more! Actually, I could, but I haven't had my coffee yet. Rave IN2 rocks! it's what should have been released in the first place! Hot Wit' U Man ‘O’ War NO! Lovesexy Funkateer

Buy Rave.
Despite songs i like, such as Last December and Family Name, RC is too mired in obligatory religious dissertation. If you want to study whether you're a banished one or rainbow child get it. If you're offended by someone thinking their religion is the only one and if you don't follow it you're going to hell, stay away from RC. Just when you start to like a song, here's comes the chorus or verse about Jesus. (no offense to believers) For all its 'experimentation' Rainbow Children is boring because the themes are so bare and repetitive. There's no mining for meaning. Some say they just listen to the music and ignore the lyrics. If you can do that, more power to you. The music on RC is awesome. But as a complete project, you can't ignore the weight of the words and the prejudice of the lyrics. Now, Rave is no masterpiece, but I like Tangerine, So Far so Pleased, Everyday is a Winding Road, Man of War, I love you but i don't trust you anymore, and Whereever you Go. This is an album that , with the right singles, could have been in the Billboard top 5. Unfortunately,he choose the wrong songs to release. There is a lot of desperate pop fare on here, like he's pandering to the younger generation. But if you hang on, you'll find a half-dozen songs you'll like (unlike RC). Even after the album is finished, you'll get a surprise kick out of the bonus Pretty Man. Let's just say, I like RAVE the moment I put it in my stereo (even the outdated better when it was made in the 80s title cut). I had to listen to Rainbow three times to like it. And I still force myself out of intellectual discipline to like it. I mean, technically, RC is a masterpiece of musicianship. But music isn't just about mechanics, but about the feeling and emotion it evokes. RC leaves me cold except for Last December. Let's

You must buy Rave, if only for 'I love U but I don't trust U anymore'(one of his best songs ever) but as an whole album TRC is more special.
But eventually you will buy them both.

Actually, the title track "Rave" is about the only track on the album I thoroughly enjoyed simply because it was an "outdated 1980s cut". The rest of the album pissed me off because he followed current trends of hip hop and followed the lead of Michael Jackson by having guest artists on the album. "The Rainbow Children" is definately one of his worst albums but at least it wasn't a "sellout" album. Andy is a four letter word.

Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic. It's an all-around good album with no need to push the skip button. I would buy it, if for nothing else, The Greatest Romance Ever Sold. It's utter fantasy paradice.

Rave is utter shit. Get TRC, his best album for quite awhile, certainly his most interesting (content-wise) ever. Possibly.

mistake, U might like it because you think U should. Thats an unpopular opinion but I will always stand by it. Live, its OK. 1+1+1=3 is overrated. [Edited 12/14/04 14:41pm] (Insert something clever here)

For me too. I never really liked TRC much until I saw the ONA tour, afterwhich, I was loving it for weeks.

For duets with Gwen Stefani, Eve and Chuck D. buy Rave, for some deep shit buy Rainbow Children. (I like Rainbow best, but Rave is fun) Rainbow is a deep album. Psychedelic trip. Goodnight, sweet Prince.
