i guess i prefer a humbler prince, the one who can remember when he himself played all the 'instruments' in his basement on that first demo tape (read drum machines and samples on the synth) to the prince who raises himself above all those he considers less than 'real'. just my 2c I prefer the cold, dark, synthesized, drum machine "old Prince" by FAR over the Prince with the horns and more traditional instruments. There's a difference between the "old Prince" and the new current artists though. Prince's drum machines were much harder than these new artists' drum machines. On the rare occassion when they do give the drum machines a harder sound, they overdo it and drown out the rest of the song with the drum machines. My biggest gripe with these new artists is that they don't have an ounce of rhythm or funk in their bones and they hardly ever get past midtempo. That's why the younger generation is more obese than any generation before them. Their music is not fast enough for them to shake the fat off their asses. The "old Prince" could jam hard, fast, and funky with his drum machines and synthesizers. If they want to play drum machines, then they need to take notes from his older music. I'm definately a music snob. Whether right or wrong, I love it when Prince or anyone else looks down their noses at these current artists. [Edited 1/21/05 0:01am] Andy is a four letter word.

I agree 100%. I love all types of music, but I can't stand the fact that most of the artists out now are just making music so that they can go platinum and waste the money on bling, over-priced clothes, and 22s on their new Benzs. I got nothing against them for living the good life, but don't sell yourself as an artist when all you are is an image that just happened to be lucky enough to get a record deal. Personally, if I was an artist, I would be offended if someone said that the music video was better than the song, but that's just me. Many artists pride themselves on being "video artists", which still confuses the bejesus out of me. SPREAD LOVE UNTIL THE SUN'S FINAL RISE--The Duality a.k.a. "WYNTER SKYE"

let me explain. i think prince is being 'snobbish' in his attitude these days because real music is in the ears of the beholder and it's not his call to make in determining what music qualifies as 'real'. obviously the world of music is in a sad state today, cart leading the horse and all, corporate band 'packages' being put together for their boy/girl good looks, lip-synching all over the place. we all know this. technology has changed musical form significantly in the last 40 years, allowing posers to take the stage and look good while sounding okay. is it important to have mastered an instruement well enough to perform live? perhaps. but whether or not a musician can take the stage and jam in the fashion prince approves, the 'old style' method of live performing, is one thing. to call a musician less than 'real' because they don't measure up to this standard is. .. well, snobbish in my opinion. i guess i prefer a humbler prince, the one who can remember when he himself played all the 'instruments' in his basement on that first demo tape (read drum machines and samples on the synth) to the prince who raises himself above all those he considers less than 'real'. just my 2c You contradict yourself. You say, "real music is in the ears of the beholder". Then you say, "the world of music is in a sad state today". How can you say that, when it's, according to you, all a matter of personal taste? If somebody likes casted boy/girl bands and quick plastic production and doesn't mind lip-synching, then he or she might like today's pop music. Hence, speaking of a "sad state" must be snobbish according to your own explanations. The difference betwenn "real" music and "non-real" stuff is not the choice of instruments, but the musicianship itself. Most of today's pop stars seem to spend their time on partys, not in studios. Why should they? They have writers, producers and art directors doing everything for them, they just have to drop in and sing some notes. If they sing bad, the computer corrects it, so you even can do the whole stuff without a trace of talent. Prince has worked so hard and put so much effort in his music, he has the damn right to criticise the situation of the music scene these days.

i can say that because it's my opinion. and unlike prince i'm not standing on a stage, addressing thousands of people and boasting that my way is the only 'real' music. [Edited 1/21/05 6:35am]

Just as I have the right to post mine, and my opinion is that some points in your statement are not very consistant. You can do the same with anything I might post here, feel free to do it! Btw, Prince never said that his way was the only real music. It's your interpretation of his words, nothing more. When you listen to the lyrics of "Musicology", it becomes obvious that there are/have been many people he considers to be "real musicians".

i'm sure he does consider some of his cronies to be 'real' musicians. but like i said before it's not his call to make. we're all entitled to determine for ourselves what constitutes real music. if prince is speaking on his opinion then he should make that clear instead of simply making a pronouncement. but you're right i'm on his case. ever since he tossed that wad of TRC at us back in 2001 i've been in disagreement with his lyrics and message in a big way. so i'm not what you could call an adoring fan at this point.

Yes, there are many musicians doing "real" music. However, in the pop/hip hop world there are not. Current R & B, in particular, is a vast wasteland of non-musicially inclined, pseudo-street posers. Back in the day you had EW&F, P-Funk, Ohio Players, James, Sly , Stevie, etc. holdin' it down and doing "real" music and real live shows. Now we got Usher, Ludacris, Beyonce, Nelly. That's why people are so blown away by Andre 3000 and D'angelo and such-lowered expectations. Not to sound like a grandpa, but the current crop new R&B acts couldn't wipe the ass of the old school. when prince goes on about 'real musicians playing real music' he makes a good point. this is a man that has learned to play several instruments. although he did use a drum machine for the first couple of years, he learned to play the drums and play them well. he has an innate talent for music and there is a reason that he is often referred to as a 'musical genius'. sure there are other musicians out there that are talented also, but few can compare themselves to prince's level of talent. i admire those that can really play instruments and play them well and it gives me chills to hear them sing just as well, but you have to admit that there aren't many of them. originality is key and that is something that is often missing from the current music scene. now we hear musicians singing songs that are not theirs (originally) and even though they try to re-do the songs in their own ways it still doesn't make them real musicians but wannabes. i prefer something original and new with maybe a subtle hint of nostalgia but i don't want to feel like i'm listening to something that is too familiar or repititious. we, prince fans, may be snobs but only because we realize that he truly is talented and we find ourselves trying to find someone else that is just as talented but are only finding empty spaces. I don't agree. I have a wide and varied taste in music and I think there are few people int eh music industry today as talented as as our man. Few have the range of voice or the innate musical talent, both for playing instruments and songwriting. I can, and do, throughly enjoy other musicians and artists - BUT I REQUIRE THAT THEY ACTUALLY BE MUSICIANS AND ARTISTS!
