Is "Around The World In A Day" a "masterpiece"?

Do any of you guys consider "Around The World In A Day" to be a masterpiece? It's my favorite Prince album, and I think it's one of his greatest(top 3), and I'm just in love with it. Does you think it deserves to be in the same league as "Sign 'O The Times" and "1999"?

I love the album very much, but I'm gonna say 'No' because I've never felt the album flowed particularly.

And I specifically mean side 2 - I like what he did with side one, starting off the album with 3 mid-tempo tracks (i.e. going against what the mass audience were expecting - another blistering opener like Let's Go Crazy).

Prince's masterpieces, it's very boring - but I think he has 4:

- Dirty Mind
- 1999
- Purple Rain
- Sign O' The Times

And I say that from an outside perspective, looking in because they are not really my favourite Prince records.

ATWIAD is probably in the next tier down, along with Lovesexy, Parade and Prince.

I thought that it was a pretty good album but some songs just stand out more than the others.

My favorites are ATWIAD the outtake, Paisley Park, Tambourine, Condition of the Heart, America and The Ladder (live version). I like the 12" of Pop Life. I like the liner notes that say that Sheila & Susannah are on left speaker and Wendy and Lisa are on the other.(or something like that).

It's definately a masterpiece in it's own category. It definately deserves to be in the same league as "Sign O' The Times", if not higher. It does not, however, deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as "1999". "Around The World In A Day" is a "new Prince" masterpiece and "1999" is an "old Prince" masterpiece. The two Princes are completely different and I cannot compare the two albums objectively because "old Prince" will win with me every time.

I think you are thinking of "Girls and Boy's", with Sheila and Lisa and the left, and the twin Melvoins on the right.

Sheila plays drums and/or percussion on Pop Life though (although the drums sound like the Linn rather than acoustic drums).

Which ATWID outtake are you referring to? And the Ladder Live? WHere is that from?

Thanks for the correction, my bad. Sheila did the remix of Pop Life 12" too. The ATWID outtake is kind of fast and the music is a tad bit different. The Ladder live I heard on a British Documentary, he plays it in the end. He sounds like Ray Charles.

No worries. Besides it's possible Pop Life has BG vocals like that too but I know G&B does for sure.

I wonder if I have that version of ATWID. I have an outtake somewhere on my ipod, the sound quality isn't that great. I htink it has more of the middle eastern instruments that David Coleman was using.

I like the live version that opened the Parade tour.....esp the synth horns... "I Think Wanna Dance! Unh!"

It's a great album, but not a masterpiece in my opinion. I think the ending two songs really let down the album, and although I like 'Paisley Park' and 'Tamborine' a lot, I think they're not up to the caliber of P's best work. They're a little more than glorified filler.

I think its a great album. Masterpiece? It depends on my mood. Some of the songs are amazing, others are just good.

You guys have totally devalued the term masterpiece just as the word "genius" rings hollow around here. It is an enjoyable album but it's not one of his better albums. I look at it as a transition or bridge to Parade. Something to lighten the mood and take the pressure off from the steam he had built up with Purple Rain. In fact, it's a step back for him-- a break from an intense period-- as he let Wendy and Lisa take the wheel for a while. It seems like a bunch of songs without a home that he put together to satisfy the record company and the fans clamoring for something new.
