Oh man, i love both Jimi and Prince for everything-guitar playing, songwriting, attitude (although sometimes P can discredit himself with that), visionary, studio genius....they both had (yes, had) it all in the mix.
Some of the live versions of Machine Gun...whoa...you've got to have it DEEEEP down to write and pull that off. Fuck that "Hendrix was sloppy" shit. If you think that then you're totally missing the point of Hendrix.
Same with Prince though. The version of Computer Blue on the First Avenue concert from 83...DEEEEEP down. And as a rhythm player he leaves everyone in the dust, including Stevie Ray Vaughn (who i love).

I have a live version of Prince doing Voodoo Chile though-surprisingly bad. But his version of Whole Lotta Love rocks.

He's commented publicly that he hated the sound of his voice and never claimed to be a singer.
But his vocals fit the musical soundscapes he created. It's just part of the package.

It's my opinion that the comical Bootsy vocal persona has a page taken from Hendrix.

I know you're not gonna claim John Lennon was a great singer. lol

Ok, and again i have to admit you are kind of right overhere... Indeed John Lennon isn't a great singer (or wasn't) but the combination of his lyrics, his sound and music makes it one!!

And I do respect Jimi hendriz as an artist, just never liked his songs (because of his voice)

So, i'll take back his voice sucks... It is just not my thing.....

Well done Theaudience.... you brought me to my senses lol

Lennon, you and I are alright. hug

We both know that Jimi and John were not technically great singers.
But both their voices are an integral part of their artistic statements.

Yep - it's interesting to me how folks can get so twitchy about "influence"...like it's some kind of creative put down - influence is not the same as "rip off". I believe it is a sign of true artistic maturity to be able to acknowledge and celebrate influence and when Prince was responding perhaps a little negatively to the claims from critics and journalists that he played or performed like Hendrix in the early 80s, let's remember that he was a creative ego in his 20s - trying to establish himself and get people to notice his originality and points of difference. Understandable defensiveness really. He's certainly not afraid to acknowledge and celebrate his influences today and in fact wants us to value our similarities... interesting....

Prince played Hendrix Red House changing the lyrics to Purple House for the first time on the Parade tour in Paris August 24 1986 again on the Sign O' The Times 1987 tour. Prince played the Hendrix woodstock Star Spangled Banner on the Diamonds And Pearls 1992 tour. Also on the 1994 Glam Slam club tour. Prince played Voodoo Child and the Hendrix instrumental villa nova junction on the 1995 Love 4 one Another concerts. 1994 American Music Awards Prince thanked Hendrix as a person "whose inspiration contributed to my success".
Goodnight, sweet Prince.

as you appear to be a set of simpletons, i'd urge you to do something simplistic and go download Voodoo Chile (It's so the obvious choice)

Get back to me with anything remotely as good by Prince if you can. Or at least suggest something so i can laugh at you retards.

Cosign this! don't have an opinion on Hendrix because I have never really had a chance to listen to some of his music, but everyone I have talked to and read about Jimi, Prince is the pupil.

confuse What elevator music has Page done over the years? To my knowledge, he hasn't done much in the way of recording except for a few albums here and there (not including the Page and Plant collaboration "Walking Into Clarksdale") like the David Coverdale album in the early 90s, the Deathwish II soundtrack, Outrider, and his short stint with The Firm. hmm Do you have some secret knowledge about his "other" recording habits that us fans aren't aware of? lol

Yeh, as a session musician,Page was hired to do all sorts of stuff. In the off periods you mentioned, he actually churned out a load of 'Musac'.

As a session player, yes he played on loads of different albums and ads, etc., but that was before even The Yardbirds. It was the main reason he stopped doing session work, because he had to play whatever the client wanted and a lot of it was Muzak-type stuff. In your original post you say it like it's been an ongoing thing in his post-Zeppelin years. I still have not heard about this anywhere. confuse

When did Prince claim that he was not influenced by Hendrix? In several articles/books that I have read about Prince, Prince has always said that Hendrix was one of his biggest influences. Jimi Hendrix is a great guitarist, no doubt about it. Too bad he died so damn young. I always have dreamed of going to a Jimi Hendrix/Prince concert. Can you imagine if those two were up on the same stage, jamming together? That would be one hell of a concert, wouldn't it? It would freakin' rock!! headbang music headbang

The is an interview I have on cd with prince, I think it was when dirty mind came out when the guy asked him if he was influenced by Hendrix and prince was like No, he's dead isn't he

of course he alsosaid he was only going to make a few more albums too so we know how much bull that interview was : )

biggrin Elevator Music music . I saw Jimmy Page on a T.V. interview hmmm , back around mid 90's . And He and Robert Plant had just got back together and touring. Jimmy didn't look the best, he started dribbling during his performance, which broke my heart, but yeh, in the post performance interview he said he'd been doing some muzak, and 'twas good to be on the road. Whether he was joking i don't know. He didn't appear to be. This was on Australian T.V.

Santana , Prince , Hendrix , all broke through new musical territory, in their own ways and I feel each broke through barriers peculiar to their own circumstances. I see influences from Frank Zappa in Prince ! Plus we all hear different. To me Hendrix had a beautiful voice, as tA said , given the "soundscape" and environment of his music.
He was also a disciplined player who was forced to play right handed, when he was lefthanded. He played for Little Richard, The Isley Brosthers, and had to move to England to get all the prejudices of American society off his back. i.e. Black, Lefthanded, Indian, virtuoso, Avante garde jazzpop Rock guitarist.
I like to appreciate players as individuals and not compare as Better or worse.
The positive thing to come out of this thread for me is; ; what a fantastic time to be alive , hearing so many great musicians taking their Art to the peak of it's limitations, and then some ...
They all do there own thang in the End. wink

I have nothing but respect for Jimi Hendrix and I think he is one of the greatest, most innovative guitarists of all time. The sound he could get from a guitar was amazing but his musicianship was kinda sloppy (granted he was off his tits most of the time!!) Prince has definitely been influenced by Jimi and anyone who says otherwise must be blind. On the whole, I would rather listen to Prince over Jimi. I guess there are some artists you click with more than others.

i really respect what u are saying...BUT...jimi being high or not has nothing (in my opinion) to do with sloppy playing ...i 100% dont agree with that...first of all we need to remember what he was working with....the effects and gear guitarist have now were not around at his time...like "locking tremelo bars " prince has one on his purple guitar that he used on the musicology tour...what that does is it enables u to vibrate the strings and bend notes down or up many steps while locking the strings at the nut so they bounce back in perfect tune....jimi was "pretty much inventing this technique" while using a standard stratocaster "non locking tremelo bar" which would make things go out of tune often....the fact that he could sound as good as he did while stretching the boundaries of guitar was and is amazing...plus he was in a three piece group...he was playing lead and rhythm all at the same time...anyone that can pull that off as well as he did is SUPERBAAD !!!! regardless if they sometimes go out of tune or not....thats my 2 cents smile

He was kidding. He had to do the Muzak thing back in the days before The Yardbirds as a session man, and I can't imagine him going back to that on purpose. It was one of the reasons he quit doing sessions. Well that and that he wanted to perform live and do his own thing.

He hasn't done much live performing since he played with the Black Crowes. He recently spent two years gathering footage for the Zeppelin DVD that was released last year, and has also been busy attending benefits, etc. for his wife's charity for poor children in Brazil. As far as music goes, he and Jeff Beck said in a recent joint interview that they'd like to get togehter and record something. Fingers crossed! yay!
