was Cinnamon Girl released as a single for grammy consideration? i mean there was no real push for this song radio wise and the single wasnt released by Sony..so i'm wondering if Prince released it for that reason

Maybe CM was released primarily for the message. When you're an artist as big as Prince you can afford to take those kind of chances. Besides, in this country, there was no way that HotAC stations would conquer their fears and play it. However, in it's own way it was still a success, especially with the Grammy nod.

Hell, I hope he releases Dear Mr. Man next, but to Urban and Urban AC stations. .

Given the fact that the US Cinnamon Girl was just a glorified CD-ROM with a promo or two tacked on, I don't really understand why they bothered with the US single at all, instead of just going for the airplay angle like he did with "Call My Name".

I agree. That might have been the better angle of attack for the single, especially given how it worked with CMN. I still think that the message to the masses may have been the overriding theme. However, let's face it, the video killed any chance for airplay with pop stations.
