Today's Challenge: Make Sign 'O' The Times fit on an 80 min CD-R

The 2 discs combined come in at right around 84 minutes...so how would you trim the 4 minutes off? which song would you cut and why?
you look better on your facebook page than you do in person hmph!

Sign 'O' The Times will fit on an 80 min. CD-R.

I've done it. The only thing I had to "trim off" is a few seconds of silence at the end of "Forever In My Life" and "Adore."

I downloaded goldwave, and then made an edit of Its gonna be a beautiful night. Its a prime song to make a much more powerful edit. I also trimmed bits out of SOTT (the bit between "Call him Nate", and the drum ending), IT, and Hot thing.

The extra time allowed me to add the U got the Look (Longer Look) instead of the standard version.

Would I do it all again? No. I'd overburn the whole thing without editing!

I do one of these:

use the edited version of the song "Sign O' the Times", use the edited version of I could never take the place of your man", or I out a portion of "Beautiful Night".
"New Power slide...."

did u ever heard about overburn...

and there is no need 4 editing.

i normally convert the songs to wave, use a program called audacity 2 amplify the sound (a kinda home remaster)

and i burn it with nero choosing the over burn option...

result:

a remastered one cd of sot wink

What I did for Pseudonyms is I just used 99 minute CDrs. Check to see if your burner can burn them and how much you can put on a 99 minute CDr. My burner only lets me burn up to 94 minutes, which is plenty smile

I had no idea there was such a thing as a 99 min CDR!

When burnt as CD Audio discs do they play in standard "Hi-Fi" CD players or will they only play on PC?

I have burned the complete 2 CD's into 1 normal 80 min. CD-R, no need to edit or skip songs, I didn't use a computer CD burner, just a normal SONY CD Recorder.

If I had to edit four minutes though, I'd cut out some of the excess instrumental portions on the title track and cut down the overlong It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night. And yeah, we could do without Slow Love. nod

Because back in the late '80s, early 90's... technology was not as far advanced, as it is today. CDs couldn't hold as much information.

That and I'm sure Warners wanted to add an extra cost for an exrta disc. SOTT cost twice as much as other CDs when it was released.

i think the answer is much simpler, he recorded it firstly as a vinyl record not as a cd...

Then why wasn't 1999 released on 2 CDs? He recorded it firstly as a double vinyl record, not as a CD.

Instead it was released on one CD with DMSR omitted, then quietly re-released once technology allowed more room on a CD.

I'm sticking to my story. biggrin

...plus, in the 1980's a "Double Album" was a big deal. An event to be reckoned with and the extra cost was only justified on really major acts; as Prince was at the time. To trim Sign 'O' The Times to a single CD would have taken the shine off of such an event.

And why not do the same for 1999? Well, not only was the technology not there at the time to squeeze all 11 tracks on first time around, but also CDs came along after it was released so the first CD release of 1999 was a back-catalogue item, not a new release...

I think you are right.
Both items where released on vinyl first. When SOTT and 1999 where released on cd there was indeed an actual limitation of the duration of the cd.
So when you transform music to cd you try to save all.

That's why DMSR was omitted. When technology was pushed to the limits of the red? book of Philips and quality of the cd 's improved 1999 was rereleased.

SOTT was very expensive just due to the length of 81 a 82 minutes. Prince was at his peak of power at that won't and my guess is that he didn't allow a cut off version of SOTT.

Its blasphamous to edit any of those songs. Who cares whether its on one CD? I have lived with 2 discs for almost 20 years. It wouldn't be Sign o the Times with any of the songs dropped or edited.
