Sign O the Times, is Prince's most overrated album IMO, although the greatest song ever written is on there (Adore). I have always found the album enjoyable but it seems like something has always been missing. I don't know, maybe I wanted more funk or something, but with the exception of a few, it seemed like much effort wasn't put into the songs musically. I love TB of Dorothy Parker, If I Was Your Girlfriend, and of course Adore, and love the lyrics of most of the songs, but I am always left with a feeling of the album could have been better musically. Prince saw Sign O' The Times as a failure because it was not Crystal Ball 3 CD set with the songs: Rebirth Of the Flesh, Crystal Ball, The Ball, Joy In Repetition, Shockadelica and Good Love on it.After Parade/Under The Cherry Moon flopped, Warner Bros wouldnt let him release a 3 CD set. Warner Bros chairman Mo Ostin said "It will be a hard sell." Prince was very, very disappointed. Prince had to reduce Crystal Ball to a 2 CD set renamed Sign O' The Times. Rebirth Of The Flesh and The Ball still have not been released. Only bootlegs. Goodnight, sweet Prince.

SIGN O THE TIMES!
I love the movie version of HOT THING. "...when you smile, when you smile..." It would have to be 1999 then PURPLE RAIN next. Shockadelica wouldn't have added anything as far as I'm concerned. Wasn't Rockhard in a funky place also intended for Crystal ball?

I wonder what other song Prince would have used for the Black Album as a replacement for Rock Hard In A Funky Place? I think the song 3 Nigs Watchin' A Kung-Fu Movie recorded February 1987! Goodnight, sweet Prince.

i feel like i missed the boat with 1999, but i love that album too. i kinda missed the zeitgeist of that album, but i think it's a work of genius nonetheless. SOTT is way up there for me, too. i'd say i like it a little more than 1999 and a little less than PR...it really hit the fact home that this man is a genius on so many levels. Damn, I feel the same way, Anx, with the exception of SOTT. That's one of the few CD's that I don't have.
