Fakes

I know this has probably been done to death but do you think we could have a stab at compiling a list of definite fake Prince tracks? I think I have a handful on bootlegs but would like to know for sure.

If this is covered in another thread or on a fansite, can someone post a link please?

Cheers smile

The "Lords prayer" sounds pretty fake to me.
there was some rumours in 1990 the song "Do anything" by a group called "Natural selection" was prince. sounds a lot like him. but the roup put out a 12" with a pic of them. anybody knows the story behind that?

P.S. I wish Graffiti Bridge was a fake.

Yep, I think Lord's Prayer is a confirmed fake... My Lord! eek

Stranger and Undergound were also confirmed as fakes. Any others?

(I suppose this thread should go in the Music:non-Prince forum too)

Fakes? Too many to mention.Aside from the ones already mentioned, the following spring to mind, though:

'Suzie Lovelace'(probably a Brown Mark cast-off)
'Different Kinda Thing'
'Help Me Baby'
'I Could Be Your Lover'
'Naughty'
'Livin' In America'
'Sleazy'
'Underground'
'Paisley Park' [instrumental]
'Cat Scratch'
'Stranger'
'Heaven Over You'
'Ozymandias Overture'
'Tinkerbell Jazz'
'If I Had a Harem II'(whoever tried to impersonate Prince on this acoustic 'studio version' is useless...)

I actually have copies of Living in America, Paisley Park Inst., and Sleazy. Living in America is most certainly a Prince song (and a cool one at that!).

Dopeman, Green Eggs and Ham, Underware, Sexy as U Wanna Be,

Fellin Kinda Freaky, 69 Positions,.....They even titled one

DOYALIKEYAWANNBEDONE

Theres also one called Strawberry Shortcake

Work That Fat sounds pretty fuckin' fake too....They got

the music from Martikas Kitchen playing with a distorted

voice talkin' shit over the top of it.....if it's not a

fake it should be.

The instrumental Underground is a fake for sure. Its actually David Foster and Jesse Johnson. You find its track 3 on the Breakfast Club soundtrack.

I saw these on the internet and downloaded them. But after I listened to them and thought, "Damn! If these are Prince, I see why he didn't release them!"

"Kiss My A$$"?

"Big Booty Mama"?

Both are too cheap and watered down (home studio demos) to by associated with Mr.Nelson.

They are hilarious!

"BBM" takes alot from SugarFoot and the Ohio Players..

The singer's voices are altered, but not to the extent of a Camille track.

They are one of his favorite groups.

With The NPG doing "Love Rolercoaster" on this tour adds to the notion that these tracks are his work.

Or...

These could be the work of that guy that made
"Yo Freaky A$$".

Are you sure that "Work That Fat" is a fake?

It sounds A LOT like Prince, especially when Prince did those segues on Exodus. It sounds alot like that segue about "Janelle's House" on Exodus.

He also mentions Sonny T. in the song, and uses a familiar phrase "quiet as it's kept" which he's used in a few other songs.

"Heaven Over You" a fake? Hey, as if you would be able to tell from the sound quality! But hey, I'll go check it out... on the other hand how could anyone else have music out with the as bad sound quality, that's vinyl detoration, badly miked, cassette duplicated etc. the worst!

However, is "Book of Love" a fake? We've been pondering over this track for about a year now and the votes are 5-2 that it isn't. Or is it just something lifted off the A.C. -album? Does Andre sound exactly like Prince? I mean, for fuck's sake I was so proud of this track since nobody else has it, but it's just so hard to tell. Very few have heard of it, and the singer sounds like Prince, but if it's Prince the vocal delivery is sort of frail-falsetto, but he has used it before. There are moments when you go like "it IS Prince", but damn it's so hard to tell.

The funniest fake however is "On With Life" which features just someone banging drums in a garage or somewhere for 35 seconds and when you check out the MP3-tag it greets you with the comment:

"You're Pathetic!"

Really cracked me up.

"Work That Fat" is NOT a fake! It is a real Prince track, recorded in 1990 I believe. His voice is just slowed down ala "Bob George".

"Book Of Love" is an Andre Cymone song that appears on his 1985 album 'A/C'.The vocals sound ALOT like Prince, though.

There's an unreleased 11:05 minutes version of 'Hallucination Rain' by Prince doing the rounds amongst collectors.

The 'Exodus' version is only 5:49 minutes.

So, no definitive list then? I guess it is better to read the Per Nilsen books "Days of Wild" or "DMSR" (I have Days of Wild) and any unreleased song that is not mentioned is probably a fake.

ISTR though that the disclaimer for "Days of Wild" says that no bootleg recordings are discussed so even then some stuff could be missed?

Cheers, mate. That's all I wanted to know. I thought so! I don't personally have any AC albums, since they're not exactly littering your local HMV. I think I'll have to buy 'em now, the song is certainly great.

"Walk don't walk #2" is also quite fakey. But "Work That Fat" is genuine, it's Prince doing the "Smash Potato Girl" voice but it's slowed down with a tape machine - meaning its harder to dissolve with a pitch shifter but yeah, it's definitely Prince... maybe.

Andre Cymone sounds ALOT like Prince. If you listen to his 'A/C' album, check out the ballad "Pretty Wild Girl".That song sounds just like a Prince song....the Linn drums, the phrasing, the sexy lyrics.I wonder if Prince secretly gave that song to Andre? It reminds me of "The Beautiful Ones".
