Prince & X-men: "We'll Call Him Nate..if he's a Boy" (SOTT)

A while back I heard that this reference in the song SOTT ("Let's fall in love, get married, have a baby, we'll call him Nate, if he's a boy") is an X-men reference.

I got into the X-men several years after SOTT was released, and in fact my first X-comic was X-Factor issue with baby "Nathan Christopher Summers", son of Cyclops and Jean Grey, who--we later learn--grows up to be Cable.

Is it true that Prince was making an X-men reference, or is that just a rumour?

I don't think so, the more obvious reference in the name is

Nate (as in)-> Nativity (as in)-> The second Coming.

A subject that's been incorporated in Prince's music from a
very early stage onward.

Nate rhymes with "late".

Sott came b4 the birth of Nathan Summers (in the early 90's) so it can't a x-men reférence.

It's maybe a Prince reference in the comics but i don't think so. wink

Thanks for a serious reply. Yeah I wasn't sure when Nathan Summers was born cuz I started reading it in like 90 or 91.

And yes I was serious, cuz I heard it somewhere (maybe even this board), I wasn't making it up.

I agree.

The name 'Nathan' is of Hebrew origin and means Gift of God.

Nothing means Nothing.

Bang's here to bring the knowledge. I've been reading X-men since 1980. Nathan Christopher was born over a year before SOTT was released. Uncanny X-Men #201 which first introduced the infant was released in early 1986. However, there is no reference to the child's name in the actual issue, so who knows for sure. Anything with the baby having to do with Cable came much much later though, so it's a real stretch trying to connect the two.

Meaning: NO.

BigBang, it's good to see another longtime X-nerd on the site! I started reading in late '83 and have been hooked ever since.

I doubt Prince had any knowledge of the X-Men. 'Batman' was the soundtrack to a comic book movie and it only had fleeting references to the comics!

Thanks Bang for droppin' the knowledge smile

Out of curiousity, did they not name the baby for like years or something?
I was never sure if his name was Nathan or Christopher cuz they always called him Christopher.

I started reading X-factor, the one where X-Archangel is being taken to the hospital and freaks out, and they're in the giant SHIP which dissappears all of a sudden and they're all falling through the air and the baby creates his force bubble to protect himself, adn Jean tries to catch him with TK but his bubble repels her.

It turns out that the lyrics "Ronnie talk to Russia" were predicting the late 90's close call the Russian government had with a full scale retaliation after detecting a sweedish weather instrument in their airspace.
