trolley cars ive been meaning to ask this for a while but figured i might understand eventually, but i admit defeat.

I may be wrong, but I assumed the line referred to a whore-y woman (trolley car =lots of passengers) who is juggling multiple lovers. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!" | |

It's been suggested in the past that this might be a metaphorical reference to a prostitute or a woman who has many lovers. Consequently, because he does not care for one night stands in these circumstances,he ends up playing his tamborine (masturbating) instead.

I suspect 'tamborine' is Prince's generic euphemism for genitalia - covering all bases.
